Academic report from GVX....

Sports talk just said 24 players all starters are on academic probation...anyone else hear anything?:ermm:

If this was ANY other school, most of you would be blasting their academics. But since it is UT, all seems to be swept under the rug. It is a big deal.

Yea I heard that yesterday but they never went into who the players were, other than the ones who are either no longer with the team or were unable to perform in Spring practice.

Wow football players have it easier? In the fall semester, they take as many hours as most other students. Add that to all of the time they have to spend practicing, playing traveling, and studying film and I really don't see how they have the time to study for class.

Student athletes do have easier majors and they do get to register for classes well before everyone else, but most of the time, the professors for the courses aren't announced by the time they get to register and many are stuck with awful teachers. I think it's a joke that people expect these kids to do as well as regular students when they have twice the number of responsibilities.

Football teams always struggle in the fall semester and then pick it up in the spring and summer semesters.

so all students only take 9 hours in the fall semester?? vast majority of football players only take 9 hours. it was 6 until last fall but NCAA changed it. 3 more hours likely made it more difficult on many of them.:eek:hmy:

The minimum required by the NCAA is 12 hours just like everyone else. Baseball, Basketball, and Softball do have reason to complain, but that doesn't mean Football doesn't have a reason to complain either. When do you think they practice? You mentioned all kinds of time for them study and go to class, but do you know how many hours are in a day? If they practice for twelve hours a week, team meetings for another four hours a week, twelve hours of classes, and then you add sleeping and eating and there is almost no time left. Also, if you are unfamiliar with how college works, most of the time professors are on a similar schedule where tests and papers are all due in the week or two every four to five weeks. I'm not sure you understand how much effort it takes to succeed in college much less on the football field.

Larry I think you are wrong on this one. They have to be full time students unless they are graduate student. Meaning 12 hours taken.

Another question. If a kid is on probation for the spring semester do they get the summer sessions to get their gpa up?

I have a friend on the football team and they were required to take at least 12 hours per semester.

Yes, they have summer.

the 12 hours in the fall semester has not been followed by football players anywhere for years and years. it was 6 prior to this year and increased to 9 this past fall. that is all that is required. by the following August, to remain eligible they have to have completed a total of 27 hours. which means if they knock out 9 in the fall, then they have to get 18 in spring and summer for 27 total or the are ineligible for the next fall.

not by the NCAA. 9 is minimum to be taken per NCAA. not sure who would have required that. maybe parents?

I think you are confusing with hours that must be passed although I am nearly certain that rule is for 6 hours. Athletes must be full time students which is defined by 12 hours minimum.

Larry you are giving me ncaa eligibility rules but my question is if a student has been on academic probation for a semester do they get the summer or are they removed from school by the university? Not an ncaa question

you are correct.

I confused enrolled with passed.

before this past fall, they had to pass 6 hours to be eligible for bowl participation. this past fall was first year of having to pass 9 hours.

you and Bruin were both right and I was wrong.. confusion happens frequently for old farts. :loco:

I work in college athletics. I know what I'm talking about. No one is expecting 4.0's from everyone, but a team GPA of 2 is just embarrassing and a problem.

I was only partly correct. I didn't know it had changed to 9hours.

Anyone have any information on the players ineligible? Judging by Jimmy's quote a lot of people weren't doing what is needed of them to continue to put on the orange jersey on a daily basis and the majority of which starters?? I'm a college student and I myself have my scholarship money taken away if not attending classes on a REGULAR BASIS so what is the deal here? Hope its simply not good information but sounds to be bad! If this is the case Mr. Dooley learn how to manage a team thank you or get the he&& out now! Been all behind this guy even knowing his previous records and now seeing how awful his coaching is.......the man needs to get it together or go on back to coaching mid major football where he can't even win there.

I'm not for sure on the school rules for removal.

what is confusing right now is status on Miller and Schofield. I don't understand where they fit opposed to the 30 or so on academic probation. I thought that was why CM and JS were being held out of football but if so, why wasn't all the others.

I'll need to speak with someone on that.

bottom line is, we have a lot of football players treading water on the academic side. Possible NCAA and school issues with them

jumping from the passing requirement of 6 to 9 is a substantial jump. I wonder how this affects other programs. Im sure we would have heard similar results.
