Ball State ran quick game and screens all game. Both are designed to negate a pass rush. We also played off and gave them the quick stuff underneath which means they can get rid of the ball quick. Way more concerned about Burrell being our best option at CB.Not being negative. Any you beat a team by 49 points is a dominant win.
Yes we played vanilla on defense, but it’s very concerning not having a sack.
We have to be able to get pressure from the edge or it’s probably going to be another disappointing season.
We really need Young and Baron to develop over the next couple of weeks to have a shot at a 9-10 win season.
3rd conversions:
Ball state - 36%
Vols - 38%
Some improvement from last season, but it was Ball State. I think to have a really good to great season we need to get into the 40% range while holding our opponents in the 20% range.
We lost focus at the end of the half. Easy to do sometimes when your playing an inferior opponent and have huge lead. The ball bounced our way on the fumble. Hate for the Ball State kid, but it’s nice to get a break when over the last 14 years plays like that usually go against us.
These are the type of games that the goal is to play everyone on the bench and get out of the game with no major injuries. I think we accomplished the goal.
Side note: Joshua Joseph looks like he will need at least 2 years in the strength and conditioning program before his body is SEC ready. Like he like he could have a Leonard Little body type.
Giving up points is a certainty. Having a drive where a grossly inferior opponent tears through us like toilet paper is not. This wasn't a case of a single busted coverage play that resulted in a touchdown. They carved us up. Our DB's wereloster than last years Easter eggs........again.......Are you suggesting that we are so good that we shouldn't give up one scoring drive to an inferior opponent?! You are going to be in for a long season if you think we have that level of talent on defense or 99% of the teams in college football for that matter lol. There are probably 10 teams in the entire country that should have that level of expectations for a team's defense and UT isn't one of them
Yeah, would have sucked, everyone getting hurt in that dumb butt gameWatching the replay I noticed a lot more cut blocks by Ball State than I though when I watched it live, especially in the 1-2 QTR's. That might have also played a factor, we didn't want to get our guys hurt so were tentative.
Giving up only 2.8 ypc means nothing I suppose. Your not gonna get sacks when Ball state was throwing chop blocks and putting in Jumbo packages for extra help. We got pressure from time to time. It’s not an excuse…I had to rewatch the game to noticeEven without blitzing we should have man handled their line. Not even close.
Well we gave everyone the blue print on how to beat our defense then.
But they didn’t beat our defense- they scored 10 points while we played the whole roster! Choosing to throw fast limits the offense to short routes. An incompletion, a stuffed run and its third and long and the offense stalls. BSU only had two decent drives the entire game.Well we gave everyone the blue print on how to beat our defense then.
We will welcome happy feet and getting the ball out in under 2 seconds all day. Big boys will not be forced to do that, but Ball State was or did, one or the other. The very first sack failure on the first play did pay off however. For what it is worth, I heard on some sports show this morning but have not verified that BAMA did not record a sack either... anybody know for sure?
It's true: Bama had no sacks. But Utah St was 8/22 passing for 57 yards.
I agree that we will open it up quite a bit as the quality of our opponent improves. And I know that we didn’t wanna show our hand, so we played vanilla on both sides of the ball and played pretty much everyone on the bench too. What’s caused the INT? I’ll tell ya. It was pressure that forced the INT that led to the 1st TD.
Also how many passing plays was quick slants, wick outs and screens to the WR? It’s hard to sack a QB when he’s taking a 2 step drop and getting rid of the ball.
Also do you know how many times we hit the QB? If my memory is correct we had 7 QB hits/Hurries. Again this goes back to getting rid of the ball in 2-3 seconds.
I do think our defense has room to improve and will get better. We will know more about the team after next weeks games. I do expect the defense of play calling to expand next week against Pitt and will lead to more opportunities for sacks and turnovers.
Then rewatch the game. Our Dline mauled them all night.I agree that we will open it up quite a bit as the quality of our opponent improves. And I know that we didn’t wanna show our hand, so we played vanilla on both sides of the ball and played pretty much everyone on the bench too.
My only worry is that I didn’t see the big guys mauling their linemen. I don’t think that was designed. It could have something to do with it being the first game, but we won’t really know until they line up against Pitt later this week and some of the more stout lines in SEC games later in the season.
Banks’ scheme is largely creative blitzes. Why have we completely forgotten about what our team last year did? We blitzed like it was nobody’s business. I’m not saying we “held back” effort because there’s no such thing in a game like football. But did we run Banks’ scheme just like we would in a more competitive game? Absolutely not. Why are we acting like they scored 40 points? I’m so lost right now.You can't play CB's 10 yds off the ball, give WR's a free release, and let the QB have a 5 yd hitch as an easy button and hope to get sacks.
They were too passive in playcalling and scheme. I try to wait and give guys time but Banks is really beginning to concern me.
UT's CB's in particular need to play physical at the LOS and get the QB's timing off. If UT did that at all last night, I didn't see it.
All of that is true. And Banks is still beginning to concern me. They put BSU in a box and didn't let them out. Pitt will see blitzes and Beasley gives them another option now beside Banks. I think TMac will factor there big too.Banks’ scheme is largely creative blitzes. Why have we completely forgotten about what our team last year did? We blitzed like it was nobody’s business.
