Heck I played in the late 80's early 90's and we were still doing it.Don't laugh too much, high school coaches well into the 1970s promoted the same thing. Salt pills dispensed and perhaps one water break during practice and one immediately following end of practice. It's a wonder we didn't have more dead.
It's been pointed out a million times, but, here is where depth and smart substitutions come in to play, right? And, maybe, hydration when they come out. The past season, our defense was always on the field with little or no time to recuperate. If this problem is fixed, we stand a good chance of winning. Reportedly, WV is not so deep.Every coach I ever had, including college years...followed the Bear Bryant philosophy.
All other things being even close to "equal"...the team that wins will be the one that is in better physical condition. I hope we never lose a game because the other team is simply better conditioned while our kids "run out of gas" in the 4th quarter.

It has been said over and over in other threads that the Vols would have the advantage if this game were played later in the year. Why? Depth. As in, West Virginia doesn't have any...their talent drops WAY off when you get to the 2nd string and beyond. Even their visiting fans point this out.
So who does a really hot, humid day favor? The team that can rotate players all afternoon long without having to suffer too much of a talent drop-off.
Short version is, this forecast favors the Vols. As long as our lads are hungry for the win and willing to work their butts off, this is 100% in our favor.
It is about ten degrees hotter in Charlotte NC and Knoxville than in the far north mountains, plus the humidity. Will that have an effect on fans and players?
