A Tale of Two Basketball programs

Hat, you say that if Tyler stays and Hopson signs, UT will be FF. LEt me ask you this (although unrelated). If CDR stays and Memphis signs Tyreke Evans (along with Garcia and Simpkins) where do you think they end up? Better or worse than the Vols?

Keep pimping that "first three years." You can use that the same way Fulmeridiots use 1998. The fact is simple. Pearl=Not an elite coach. Not even close.

So when do you propose to get rid of him. Elite is gained through experience and time. Kinda like you are dismissing it before the jury comes into give the verdict.
The Pearl Era IMO starts next year. I would not anoint him right now but I am not going to say he is not an elite coach without giving him due diligence.

I do feel like if back in 2005 someone was being interviewed for the job and guaranteed the following in his first three years...

At least one tournament win per year
Two sweet sixteen appearances
#1 ranking
2 year home winning streak

...there wouldn't be a single VN poster that wouldn't want to hire the man that could deliver that.

If CDR stays and they sign Evans, they're a top 5-10 team again. They'll be on par with Tennessee.

What is the point of worrying about defining Bruce Pearl at this point? He's got a total of 3 years in Division 1 under his belt. Annointing him as elite or an alsoran is about 5 years premature at this point.

I'll use your standard of counting wins at nowhere programs as impressive and see how many names I come up with. I assume I can count JUCOs, high schools, middle schools, and training leagues. So, since it doesn't matter where you win, I'll start a free form list: Mike Dunlap, Herb Magee, Rick Insell, Bob Hurley, Danny Hurley, Bud Pressley, Bill Self, Jody Wright, Ben Howland, Bill Self, Gary Williams, Sylvia Hatchell, Van Chancellor, C. Vivian Stringer, Tara Van Derveer, Izzy Washington, Stank Brown, Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams, Andy Landers, Bob Huggins, Thad Matta, Jim Calhoun, Geno Auriemma, John Calipari, John Beilein, Joe Carson, Steve Shipley, Ben Howland, Lon Kruger, Jon Loyer, Gib Arnold, Gary Williams, Rick Barnes, Rick Pitino, Billy Donovan. I'm now bored with this exercise, but suffice it to say there are probably 80 more names I could add without much thought.

Who are the 50 D-I coaches with better resumes? Men's or women's or both?

Maybe we should up the list to 130.

Don't you get it? He HAS to be put in his place. Even though no one seems to be able to accurately define the place. But some want to make damn sure it is undrestood anyway.

Note: I think he has more than 3 years of D1 under his belt.

I am agreeing with you. I feel that Pearl is a great Coach. He has energized this program and taken this team and overachieved. I believe he will continue and I thing he is an elite coach. One that can take this Team and build of which they will get better as time progresses. I may have misunderstood but I felt hatvol was stating he was not an elite coach. I can agree with that seeing he is 3 years into program that was a Tier 4 level team. We have gone from 4 to 2 in two years. We have to maintain and gain ground for him to be considered elite. He will earn it. Too early to judge.

8 years.

The jury is still out on Pearl (as far as if he can become a GREAT coach). I think he's probably the best coach to come to UT since Mears (even though Kevin never stood a chance, but I digress). I think he's a good coach, but yet all I read about in these type of threads is how Bruce isn't the only one that could win here. I think that's true, but he basically come out and resold the program to the fans. Attendance is up, excitement is up, and recruiting is on the rise. He got UT fans interested again, and in a short amount of time. That is no small feat. Plus, he made it fun, and didn't care what the so called "experts" thought.

I don't care if anyone thinks Cal is better than Pearl. Pearl was the right fit at the right time, and if he stays long enough, good things are sure to follow. So blast me.. it doesn't matter. I don't spend my money on what someone on a UT board has to say, nor do I base my opinions. I just wish there was the same excitement in football that there is bball. Hopefully that will change.

As a youth during the Don Devoe era in the knoxville, hat and others will feel the same appreciation that the 2007-2008 years team has accomplished. Some of you were my age during the early exits in the NCAA but experienced the exhilaration of the 79 SEC tourney championship. The late 70's and early 80's teams were nationally competitive teams like the bruce pearl teams today. The teams in 77 and 82 shared the regular season title and the one sweet 16 in 1981. I am glad we have that excitement back today.

From a perspective in Tennessee basketball history, Bruce Pearl is the best coach we have had since Devoe.
Attendance has increased by an average of 7,436 per game since Bruce arrived.
Nationally, Bruce Pearl is a decent coach who has made a football school into a top 15 program in basketball.

Bruce Pearl is the reason we got so many new members here at Volnation outside of football season.

Pearl's accomplishments is not even equal to devoe at this point. Devoe has 3 SEC championships (1 tourney and 2 regular) 1 sweet 16 and 7 ncaa tourneys.

Pearl has 31 wins, an outright championship (something DeVoe never got -- all his were shared. Hell Jerry Green has a shared championship), 2 sweet 16's in 2 years, a #1 ranking and 3 NCAA tourneys in three years.

All the talk of these SEC "Eastern" division football titles make me sick were also shared and determined by tiebreaker. I guess we should return the Eastern Division champion rings.
back to the topic...
No SEC tourney championships while losing to inferior opponents in the first round and getting 1 win this year. Being a 2 seed twice and losing in the round of 16 to lower seeded teams is an underachievement. Yes it was a good year but play to the level the seed we were given. We have not done that. Until so, he has not surpassed Devoe in the history of UT basketball.

SEC Outright championship >>>>> SEC tournament championship.

Nice observation. It's interesting to notice the absence from the board of all the Bruce slurpers who have been yammering for three years that Memphis is overrated. I guess they can't deal with the fact that, in each of those seasons, Cal has taken his troops deeper into the tournament than Pearl.
Somewhat like the Cal slurpers that said I was too stupid to ever respond to again after I said we'd leave Memphis with a win on their home court?? Tells me several things....none of wich are that Memphis is a better team. CBP will eventually win out AND surpass the consecutive loser to Tennessee despite the best efforts of the NCAA and Vol haters around the country. :salute: Hell, Hat, we all think you are a riot, but right now is not the time to go slapping at Pearl, the boys and the fans. Just like I NEVER mentioned what an ass you acted like about Tiger High kicking our tails this year until these recent loss jabs.

As of right now, I think having the experience that Cal does is what is getting him where he is. I think we have just as much talent but not the seasoning.
...not to mention the obvious.....soft sched's leave you fresh. We had to have a plethera of milemarker goals throughout the season. They needed two.
