A Tale of Two Basketball programs

What is this complete bashing of Pearl? The dude's been here three years and turned a program around 180 degrees.

Yes he has underachieved in the SEC & NCAA tournaments (based solely on seeding), but he has taken Tenn to new heights. He doesn't deserve elite status yet, but to say he isn't one of the 50 best current college basketball coaches is absolutely ridiculous.

again, nobody said that. I've heard that he doesn't have one of the top 50 resume's and his chosen style of play doesn't win big games.

I'm not disagreeing with latter part, but I think you would be hard pressed to find 50 current coaches with Pearl's resume.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but you said somewhere, either in this thread of the Bill Self thread, that you could name 50 coaches with better resumes than Pearl?
There are 50 coaches with better resumes. 3 trips to the Sweet 16 doesn't qualify one for Springfield.

3 Sweet 16's, a #1 ranking, a complete turnaround of a program, a conference title for a school that hadn't won one in 40 + years. Again, you have to look at it relatively. Pearl has done things that maybe one other UT coach has done. IMO, that qualifies him as a top 50 current coach.

If you don't think he's one of the top 50, then tell whose the 50th and lets compare.

If you use standards of before and after, Jim Calhoun and John Calipari are the greatest coaches in college basketball history.

I don't know if you saw this so I will ask you again? Do you think Pearl will win a Final Four and/or national title in the near future?

If Tyler Smith returns and Scotty Hopson signs with Tennessee, they'll be in the Final Four next year.

tyler stays, hopson signs and the rest continue progressing (ramar would have to stop regressing), we have a leg up onit next season.

I look at coaches in getting to the final 4 and he could easily do that next season.

Are you that confident? What do you think their regular season record would be? And how do you think they do without Tyler?

Sorry if too many questions.

Not sure what the nonconference schedule will end up looking like, but I'd think we'll have roughly the same conference record. Without Tyler Smith, Tennessee becomes a 20 win team.

In that case, I'm hoping he returns. He seems like he will be taken in the first round, in which case he said he would leave.

I agree, but I think you'd be surprised to see how far Bruce falls down the list if you account for program history and resources.

the resources are definitely there at UT to succeed, but recent previous coaches haven't taken advantage of it. I really don't know how good of an X's and O's coach Pearl is, but holistically, with his PR moves and such, he is pretty good coach.

I think we're a little better than that, but not substantially

If Tyler stays, whats your prediction on where Tennessee finishes in the SEC?

I think Tennessee wins it again. Florida and Kentucky would be in close pursuit. Ole Miss and State should be the class of the West, but they wouldn't finish ahead of UT.

they win it handily

Florida will be much improved. I agree TN should be the favorite, but it will be a much closer battle for next year's title than it was this year. Throw KY in there too, favorites if they win the Scotty sweepstakes. Miss St is stil not out of the Hopson race either. With him, they become a really good basketball team and could very easily win the outright title IMO.
