A Tale of Two Basketball programs

Tell me the last coach at UCLA to go to three successive Elite 8's (and 2 final fours, possibly 3 in a row) without mob money being involved?

Oh that's right. You can't.
That's it. Keep drinking the Kool Aid. All jobs are created equal. Winning at UCLA is the same as winning at UMASS. That's perfectly logical.

1. Yes.
2. It depends on Tyler Smith decision about the NBA draft and Scotty Hopson's choice of schools.

i pmed you yesterday about this but i was on all sorts of cold medication so it may not have made enough sense. I remember a remark early in the season about fat cats/alley cats that I believe you brought up.

This Tennessee team was successful because of it's ability to stretch the court and run all game long. It would not have been nearly as successful running a half court game.

So my questions are does Bruce Pearl have the ability bring in the talent needed for a more traditional offense and if he can bring them in, does he have the coaching ability to make them successful? He's proven he's a great motivator, now it's time to prove he's a great coach.

I never said that. I simply said Ben Howland was an elite coach.

Calipari is a very good coach. Elite? Hardly.

god forbid we get to enjoy the accomplishments of our team/coach without comparing them to the high school further down I40

Yes, on the first question. The jury is out on the second one.

Pearl will prove to be nothing more than a flashy version of his mentor, Tom Davis.

Doesn't sound like the same person who posted this just less than a week ago:

"1. I've never been prouder to be a Tennessee basketball fan. Against a game, well drilled opponent, carrying the weight of a program with a history chock full of tournament collapses, and facing a crowd screaming, in great part, for their #2 seeded scalp, Tennessee gutted it out and punched their ticket to Charlotte."

Regarding resumes, if the Cavs or Lakers had drafted based on resumes, then they wouldn't have chosen LeBron or Kobe.

Second, I'd be astonished if there were 50 coaches with a resume better than this:

#14th amongst active coaches in NCAA tournament winning percentage.

3rd highest amongst all coaches in overall winning percentage.

Second-fastest coach to reach 300 victories.

3 Sweet 16 appearances.

In his first head coaching job he took a team from 10 wins the year before he arrived to 22 wins.

In his second job he won more games in a season (26) than the school had ever won.

In his third job he took a team from 14 wins to 22 wins, most wins in a season in school history (31), and its first #1 ranking of all time.

He didn't invent the game, but he's a self-promoter, a clown, a marketer, and a winner. Period.
Yeah, reaching 300 wins at Jerkwater State is very impressive.

As time passes, I have the ability to discard optimism and pride in favor of harsh realitites.

Okay, and in my mind a flashier version of Dr. Tom Davis is infinitely better than the crap I've witnessed since I moved to Kville in 1981. So I guess I'm still proud and optimistic given that perspective.

That's weak. Winning anywhere is impressive.

But if you insist, then we should remove K's 73 wins and Knight's 102 wins at West Point.
When Knight was at West Point, the Cadets were making the NIT when it mattered and playing the best the East had to offer. At least have something grounded in historical fact if you're going to try and fluff Bruce's time at Jerkwater State beating up on the Flatline Techs and Cupcake Colleges of the world.

Fair enough. I know you stressed it earlier, but how important is someone like Hopson or more importantly in my opinion a PG to this recruiting class for Pearl? Isn't McCoy still considering UT? I think if Pearl can't bring the big recruits this year, it will take some time for Tennessee to be amongst the elites of the SEC. UF and UK are going to get a whole lot better next season.

It's either optimism or pessimism for you, no logic.

I understand the emotional swings. And I wear mine on my sleeve when I watch the Vols, live and in person.

And I also understand that logic is directly tied into emotions. Driving home from Charlotte Thursday night I was not too logical. Today I feel a bit more logical.

So Hat, since you don't think much of Pearl's resume right now, do you think he will ever get to final four's and win a national title?

Here's a idea that will make both of us happy. Don't ever respond to anything I write again. I have neither any use nor any respect for anything you have to say, and I figure the feeling is mutual. It will spare the rest of the board having to read continual sniping.

You couldn't be more wrong.

But if you don't respect my opinions that's your deal.

Such as Worcester Polytechnic Institute? Maybe that was back when that program mattered too.

Here's my point: dissing a coach for winning is ridiculous. Regardless of where it is. It's all relative. Pearl has shown he can win at Jerkwater State, at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and at Tennessee. Show me evidence that there are 50 coaches who've done better, and I'll shut up.

I'll use your standard of counting wins at nowhere programs as impressive and see how many names I come up with. I assume I can count JUCOs, high schools, middle schools, and training leagues. So, since it doesn't matter where you win, I'll start a free form list: Mike Dunlap, Herb Magee, Rick Insell, Bob Hurley, Danny Hurley, Bud Pressley, Bill Self, Jody Wright, Ben Howland, Bill Self, Gary Williams, Sylvia Hatchell, Van Chancellor, C. Vivian Stringer, Tara Van Derveer, Izzy Washington, Stank Brown, Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams, Andy Landers, Bob Huggins, Thad Matta, Jim Calhoun, Geno Auriemma, John Calipari, John Beilein, Joe Carson, Steve Shipley, Ben Howland, Lon Kruger, Jon Loyer, Gib Arnold, Gary Williams, Rick Barnes, Rick Pitino, Billy Donovan. I'm now bored with this exercise, but suffice it to say there are probably 80 more names I could add without much thought.
