A lot of DeBord PR Spin....

If Griese and Brady says DeBord is a great hire, that is good enough for me. They are far more qualified to judge Butch's selection than I am. Go Vols!

That settles it. After all, the great Saban endorsed the Dooley hire.

Oh, wait ......

OP has lots of experience in coaching. All you have to do is check the other forums here and he is always giving out GREAT advice. I have never seen someone so well versed in all of the elements of college sports. From football to softball, he leaves o stone unturned. He is, it seems, even a director for a PR firm, as he can spot spin from a space shuttle.

From practice videos/reports that I've seen, Bajakian mainly worked with the QBs and WRs. DeBord is the freaking offensive coordinator, which means he's gonna work with the entire offense. Yes, he's also the QB coach now, but he still has a hand in the receivers, running backs, and offensive line. You obviously don't know football very well.:bad:
You pointed out a great fact. The people that cry the most on here do not understand football. They show it when they start spouting their nonsense.

Still trying to figure out where I cried...I put out that Debord would use his vast experience as an OL coach to help Mahoney...he most likely won't be as hands on with the running backs and wide receivers...Coach Jake touched base with the whole offense of course but I bet he wasn't showing guards how to pull as much as QBs how to dropback. Where's the nonsense in that?

I read most of this same snarky drama when Butch was hired. Then I read it about Jancek.

The sad thing about most of you hand wringing ninnies is that you never learn a thing from your past mental breakdowns. Endless loop of dread and worry. Perfect 20/20 hindsight.

Once again, Butch plainly stated that the system was not going to change. That is why there was no flashy guy hired.

If he brought in a new guy he might want different assts and because of the continuity already there on the staff things might not go smoothly. We gotta remember.its still BUTCH'S offense so not much is going to change. Don't see what the fuss is on who they get. I think Jake would have done fine and VN nearly had a cow early on so if DeBord fails I think it will be because Butch's philosophy fails.

It has been said many many times in different threads but -- there are sure members of the Legions of the Miserable on here. They will never admit it and actually call others out to dispute it but they are amongst us. Personally, I am a pretty happy season ticket holder who sees a brightening future we have not seen in a while in VOL LAND. Happy trails...

On behalf of all sane University of TENNESSEE fans,, I would first like to welcome Coach DeBord and secondly apologize for the nonsense found in this and other threads featuring people who think they know more than they actually do.

It is obvious that Jones and the UTAD have gone to some extra trouble to sell the fan base on the DeBord hire. First, they intentionally waited until after signing day to make the announcement, because they knew the fan reaction would be bad. Second, in the UT announcement, Jones doesn't even mention his time coaching with the DeBord. That's no accident: I think the coach didn't want to highlight their old friendship. Third, how about that DeBord quote about how he wanted to be "selective" about the job he took. Really? He's selling that line but I'm not buying it--he's been out of coaching for years.

Also, how about all those quotes from former michigan players about what a genius DeBord is! Never seen that before. Jones had a chance to go out and get a good spread/read-option coordinator. Instead, he he barely went through the motions of a search and took the easy route of hiring an old coaching crony from the Lloyd Carr era who needed a job. Hope it works out...

Debord was a great OC at Michigan . There are alot of variables as to why he would run a power running based offense at Michigan..the two cheif reasons 1 ) Carr 2 ) awesome defense. No reason to throw it around the yard when the other team can't score

Why would we need a 'read option' guy ? We dont run a 'read option' offense ...we run a decidedly pro style 'gap scheme ' offense that is predicated off the west coast passing game and the dive running game. We run about 3 'zone read ' plays a game . No worries , if we decide to run more , there is no need for an 'expert'. It is a freakin high school offense . We could consult with any number of high school coaches that run the wing-t for an expert opinion

I dont think it is any coincidence that Butch hired a guy that has a level of expertise with the Oline and Tight ends. Butch's offense is predicated off of TE's and power running . You have not seen that yet because we havent had any TEs . When we get 3 or 4 TEs , you will see the real offense and not the ad lib you have seen thus far .

Don't worry, Mike DeBord won't ever see any of this. Nor will Butch. Or any of the other coaching staff. They don't have time to read message boards, at all.

There MIGHT (might) be a person on the public relations staff who has it as an additional duty to keep one eye on this and other fan sites, just to be able to provide the AD and coaches a 'feel' of the community. But if that person prints off and shares even one post out of every 10,000, I'd be surprised. And even then, most of the coaches probably won't see it unless it's the one in a million that is so unique it gets stapled by the water cooler. ;)

What in the world did we expect former players and colleagues to say?! It's not like these guys go around bad mouthing and kicking each other in the @$$ in public. Hope it ends up being a great hire and my doubts a proven wrong.

Even if the system does not change you still can hire a great OC. When Cut took over for Sanders he ran the same offense but it was night and days BETTER under Cut. The great OCs are able to execute the offense on a different level and take the same players who sucked the year before and make them better. That is why DeBord has not been an OC for 7 years, he is not on the level of a Cutcliffe. DeBord ran CMU's program into the ground and I would be willing to bet he does the same thing with our offense. He would have been an OK choice for OL or TE coach but not OC.

Not sure what he did as a HC matters. He's not UTs HC. As an OC at MI, the win/loss ratio was stout. If he can come in and average 10 wins a year like they did at MI, I'll take it. A couple years like that and I'd expect CZA is ready to take over. Imo, the plan makes sense.

I disagree with the Sanders and Cutcliff statement. Sanders was overridden by Fulmer and held back. Fulmer even admitted to this. Fulmer did not do this to Cutcliff.. Cutcliff ran his offense. Sanders has been successful since leaving UT.

DeBord may have struggled as a HC, but he hasn't as a OC. Some people can handle that job.. some can't.

The more I look at the hire...I'm liking it. if he can develop Qb's the way Brady and the others say he did with them..i'm all in!

Everyone here does realize that he is not coaching the O Line right? I keep seeing posts about how our run game will get better because he will coach up the OL to block better... He is the OC along with being the QB coach, a position he has not coached since like 1985 if Josh Wards tweets are correct. I'm pretty sure he wasn't the QB coach for ol Terrific Tom.

So, you don't think the OC ever talks to any of the position coaches and alters how they teach the position? He will be able to look at the scheme and make corrections and suggestions to the approach. It is so interesting how CBJ still has to "prove" every single decision he makes is the correct one. The chicken littles of this board never stop. Why don't we wait at least till the Orange and White game to see if anything has changed?

I don't know why people keep bringing this up. All offenses, no matter what style, have the same concepts. You still zone block on runs, no matter if you're in the I formation or spread. DeBord installed a zone block protection scheme at Michigan that all spread offenses still use today. Why get another read option coordinator? So we can throw 70 screen passes and run from the spread at the 2 yd line? DeBord will be able to teach better blocking schemes that are designed for a running attack, which is what this entire system is centered around. The guy has been a successful offensive coach and knows everything about the offensive line. Don't forget he coached the Seahawks offensive line and guess what...they run a West Coast offense, which is actually more of what he ran at Michigan. As I said before, it does not matter whether you run an option, spread, one back, West Coast offense because all offenses have the same building blocks. DeBord is a smart offensive minded coach. He can learn our playbook in a week. Let's not forget too, Butch was under DeBord at CMU and I watched some film from them in 2002 or 2003 and they were pretty much running the same things we do now under Butch. They're familiar with each other and Butch is keeping this system. DeBord can only add to our offensive attack by being a better teacher than Bajakian. He will be able to coach up our offensive line and instill a better running game, which are two things we really need if you wanna championships.
