A loss to Vandy trumps a combined UGA/Gator win

1996 UT (Led by Peyton Manning) lost to a Memphis team that posted a 4-7 overall record.... and that was year 4 for him....

Edit: I have removed the "no one called for Phil's head" comment after realizing I was incorrect.

Memphis didn't keep us from winning the division. USC did.

are you kidding? i remember that, i was there, and i remember a lot of negative reaction after that game.

in fact, up to that point, while there were always rumblings about Fulmer, after that game, for many, it sealed the deal on whether or not they wanted him gone.

I think most reasonable fans acknowledge this isn't the right time to dump Butch especially with improving in the win column each year, but goofy Derek Mason and Vandy beating UT may be the death knell. Purely hypothetical thread.

I guess I missed all the negative reaction, but It is a good thing we didn't have social media back then, or the witch hunt might have cost us a national championship 2 years later, and firing a hall of fame coach.

True... I just get frustrated with the constant dumping on the program and watching TV and a portion of the crowd empties after UF loses....those are the things recruits see... Thought I would put out a reminder that bad games happen... even to the best coaches (not saying Butch is in the best coaches category by any stretch.)

Can you provide proof that no one called for his head? Because I was at UT at that time and I remember it differently.

I got married on that day.
20 years!! Nov. 9

That was also the day Holyfield beat Tyson first time.

And yes, people wanted Fulmer's head. The difference is social media did NOT exist.

I understand the attrition situation. I don't form my opinions in a vacuum. I've been here watching all year....against Appy State, Virginia Tech, Ohio, TAMU, Bama, USC, and UK. Teams have had success running on this team all year. Mizzou setting a school record for rushing on us is just the cherry on top.

Yes and the most points scored against this defense before the attrition started was 28 by Fla, and that was without maybin and Sutton. Starting at AM, we had a rotation of 4 solid DT's and when O'Brien was lost that rotation dropped to 3. Then, Tuttle, then McKenzie, in subsequent games and now every game we play we give up a ton of points. There is more to defense than rushing yardage alone. For instance, You can give up all you want between the 20's but if you can get turnovers and hold them to field goals you are playing sound defense. The atrocious defense did not start until we started losing our rotation of DT's.

Actually, did we not beat Fla and Ga without Sutton, maybin, and Kirkland?
But, guess what? We had 4 solid DT's. You must have talent in the middle or your defense will never be good.

It is in year 4 when we were picked to win the east. That's my opinion. You're entitled to yours, and welcome to cheer for average football just because we're better than we were under Dooley. However Dooley didn't give up nearly 700 yards on the ground against a 3 win East Rival. That is worse than mediocre, it's coaching malfeasance.

I've got a grip. Why can't people grasp that we want better for the program because we LOVE it too. I'm not being negative for the sake of being part of the NegaVol club. I see things about my alma mater, and it's football program that I'm concerned about.

Well said.

Nope, Dooley gave up 496 passing and 226 on the ground to a sun belt team.

It seems our #1 expectation for team 120 has failed to materialize, UT winning the east. Now, not to say we are in the driver's seat, but UT has a good shot at making the Sugar Bowl and opponent being Oklahoma. Injuries are what they are and all teams are dealing with various degrees but UT has a legitimate shot at getting the Sugar bowl invite. I can't think of any reason team 120 can't visualize this and play it's heart out to beat Vandy. This would be the greatest tribute the players could make to the seniors who have given their all to get the UT football program back to respectability. UT should be well motivated heading into Nashville. I'm not even gonna entertain a notion of losing this week. I've already read the posts on this thread and the adjectives used to describe a loss. WGWTFA !!!

Imagine how upset you'd be if we didn't win that game. I'm not happy with giving up 700 yards but I'll take an ugly W any day over an L.

The very thought that we could lose to Vandy is freaking disgusting. It would ruin our year even worse than it has been already by injury and prima dona idiocy.
