A Few Thoughts on Summer Practice

1) I did not expect it, nor do I believe the coaches did either, but I believe that Fugate will be a great back up to Herman. I think many fears due to Lather's durability have been put to rest by the play of Channing. hats off to the kid and to the coaches that initiated the move.

2) Teague seems to have experienced somewhat of a rebirth. I admit that I have always expected big things from him since he flipped to us from UF. Maybe there is a lesson to be learned here about simply never giving up on a player. I think that he is finally coming in to his own and will be a great player at a position of need for us this year.

3) What a great pick up Brain Randolph was by CDD. The kid is a player that was passed over by many schools. We never mention his position because he has just locked it down. How UGA didnt offer is a mystery for Dateline NBC.

4) Very happy to see Moore named the starter. I think his ability is unquestioned and its nice to see him finally step up. He has a tremendous upside.

5) LaDarrell McNeil, Geraldo Orta, Tino Thomas, Deion Bonner, and Daniel Gray are all players. I am more excited about this group in the defensive backfield than I have been in some time.

6) Very encouraged that it seems like Neal is finally going to live up to his potential. The fact that he owns all but one strength and conditioning record for his position in program history and didnt enter this year as the unquestioned #1 rb is criminal imo. I expect great things from him this year. Some of his production this year will be attributed to the upgrade with Pittman as well.

7) Borque leaving sure does sound like addition by subtraction. His dad sounds like another Juicy Locke.

8) Quenshaun Watson will house a couple this year, book it. Let's just hope he doesnt put an equal number on the ground.

9) Good to see Hood up to 306. I know that LK took a tremendous amount of grief as did the program as a whole, but Im glad he received another chance. I think he will contribute this year significantly depth wise.

10) The future is bright my friends, especially if we can catch a few breaks this year.

Wish we had the depth to move Brewer to OLB and be done with it.

Great post Rex! I think our defense is going to be as good if not better than last year, and I definitely think we are going to play more agressive and physical.

didn't know that about Neal and the strength records, wow!

Side note: wonder which one is the one he doesn't have....slacker...

What are Neal's lifting stats? There is no way he is stronger than Jamal Lewis was. I remember when Lewis and Al Wilson had a lift off and were benching well over 500 lbs. Those guys were freaks.

Great post Rex! I can not wait to see Neal this year and I agree with Watson! Dude is super quick on his feet to go along with his top end speed.

Oh, and here's a random rant. Why do people have to quote an OP that is really long just to reply with a sentence or two? Takes forever to scroll down and we get who you are replying too... Carry on.

Here is my biggest concern going into this season. Defense, specifically linebacker. Watching Herman Lathers interview yesterday made me very concerned and i really feel for him. He basically said he hasnt been 100% since the ankle break and now he has a quad injury. I have had quad injuries and they dont bother you until you try to run full out and then it's a miserable pain. Its also a very hard injury to heal without real rest. Herman out means we will have to shuffle our backers to spots we really dont want them. I also dont believe channing moving to backer for a couple months will be the real answer. He didnt look great during the orange and white game.

Neither has Bray the past 2 years.

Neal turned it up at the end of the season last year. He has big play potential both as an RB and WR. The guy is incredibly athletic and will be a huge asset to this team. Hopefully M. Lane helps him out and splits carries with him. Lane has a lot of potential but needs to hit the holes quickly.

I think our LB depth may not be as bad as everybody thought it was going to be. It's scary after the 2nd team, but I think the first two teams are solid, although the adjustments will take a few games for many of the players moving to new positions.

247 didn't have the exact #'s on some but they said they were close:

Squat: 500+
Bench: 400+
Power Clean: 300+
Vert: 42"
Broad Jump: 10'6"
20-yd shuttle: 4.01
40: 4.36

FWIW, Devrin Young ran a 4.39 2nd fastest player on the team.

I would like to know what Watson's and Young's weights are up to. If either or both can play above 190... Lane may struggle to get the ball.

I'm not quite as pessimistic as you, but I do have concerns about LB. It just sounds to me like the first time Lathers tries to go "all out" in a practice or game he will re-aggravate one of his injuries and be shelved for the year. Not a knock on him...I really feel bad for his situation. But it just doesn't sound like he's going to be able to make it very deep into the year. Hope I'm wrong. Thoughts?

Don't put a freakin' freshman at KO or punt returner. Why do coaches always want to put a speedy freshman in that role when they are guaranteed to fumble and cost you a game. Don't understand it. The odds are much higher that a freshman will fumble before taking it to the house--much higher.
