Tony Elliott is the "sexy choice" based on the media and others crooning for him to get his chance. He has been "mentioned" with such lofty jobs as Titans OC and Seattle OC slots as well as others over the past couple of years. But how much of this is really validated (and how much is this coming from word of mouth or his own agent pushing his client)? Please look at his record and find one piece of data that suggests he will be even modestly successful as a Power 5 head coach? He was given the titular role of CO-OC after 2015 at Clemson. Chad Morris who had been CO-OC from 2011-14 at Clemson went on to SMU where he had marginal success (yes, I know it was 3 years SMU where he went 14-22) and then was hired as HC at Ark. where he set a school record for 10 losses and was summarily fired in his 2nd year. Elliott's CO-OC from 2015-2019 was Jeff Scott (former coach Brad Scott's son at SC). He has gone on to post a 1-8 season at USFla for his first year as HC. He is under some heat and had to make wholesale changes to coaching staff to keep his slot. If you look closely, you'll see Dabo Swinney with a clipboard in every game since .....forever? Yes, its because HE - Dabo - is calling the plays. Even in 2020 Swinney called the plays. Tony Elliott is the RB coach at Clemson just like Morris was the QB coach just like Scott was the WR coach. They were given the title of CO-OC for resume purposes and NOT to run the offense. NOTHING here suggests that any of these 3 guys - Chad Morris, Jeff Scott, or TONY ELLIOTT are destined for HC success. DABO SWINNEY is the OC at Clemson. Don't be fooled (AD Danny White) into buying the hype. Be very leery of hiring TElliott for our next coach. I have no doubt Tony is a very good man and a very good position coach, but you will get no do-overs in this choice i'm afraid. You looked at Elliott once for the UCF job and decided no. Nothing has changed in TElliott's real resume since that interview. These rumors of interest by different pro teams is just that....rumors. Its part of the Hype Train. Heck, I'd take a shot with Troy Walters current OC at UCF over Elliott - at least Troy Walters is a real OC!
Got to get it RIGHT this time !
