A current player tells a recruit we are loaded and don't need him....

Just as an FYI, Rivals (I know), has Dontavius Jackson and Martin Ward as the 2 backs in GA better than Poole. I thought Poole was a good pick up back in October.

However, he is a soft verbal and he's taking visits and liking them.

Combine that with how our coaches raved about Vereen, coupled with CPF's consistent use of players with more experience, I think Vereen enters the fall ahead of Poole.

New Article Today says he is solid again. I believe he is done with other visits etc. See Volquest.

Apparently Dave Hooker was interviewing Deon Walker, a recruit from Virginia, when Walker said that Daryl Vareen told him we are "loaded" at WR and don't need him. He is now considering other schools because of this. This is not a rumor and did come straight from Walker himself. This is a bit disturbing and conceited to be coming from one of our redshirt freshman.

Thoughts??

I found a link to the audio. Seems to me this is exactly what he told him but Walker just didn't come out and say it like that. You be the judge.

IMO that recruit already knew UT had a lot of young talent at WR and used that as an excuse for not having interest, instead of simply saying UT already has a lot of talent at the postion and I don't want to compete with that many people. It comes across better for him.

I cant believe some of you are viewing this the way you are. Apparently he values his friendship with Walker. How good of a friend would he be if he lied to him and told him our freshman WR's were no good? He didnt smack talk UT and tell him not to come. His friend asked him about the players UT has at WR and Vereen told him the truth. He said that we have some a large number of very talented WR's. Bottom line.

My thoughts exactly. It sounded like Vereen told him he would have some stiff competition and Walker didn't like that, not Vereen's fault.

Daryl Vereen stated the truth to a friend...Anyone who thinks Vereen was the reason we lost this guy is a complete idiot.

You guys make me laugh.........the offseason threads being....

And by the way, Vereen will have a much better career than Poole....Vereen was a huge steal last year and will see the field sooner than most of you think

Vereen may have speed but not much more than Poole and Poole has a lot more on top of his shoulders and power in his frame. Poole is a 4.5 that is what he ran before his ankle injury and now that he is healthy. He is an Honor Roll student with no behavior issues. He was the number one back in GA in his class before his ankle injury and still should be IMO. He is a workout junky and will be a stud. He has excellent hands i.e. he is a WR in high school as well. He was essentially the man on his team as a Jr he won his state title. I live in GA btw. As to the other two guys above him on scout, one is actually a LB and will be one in college and the other is a fast dude from Atlanta who lives off big plays has little technique developed and fumbles often.

Pull Vareen's scholly?? That is ridiculous. There is no telling what is said between all the players.

If i were a redshirt Frosh trying to get some playing time and this stud WR was asking about the team, I would try and plant things in his head.

I thought Vareen was gonna be a pretty good player anyway?

This thread reminds me of Kelly Washington telling Donte' Stallworth he was going to declare for the NFL if Stallworth would. So, Stallworth does and Washington stays. Stallworth tried desperately to come back to UT. What a scumbag Washington was.

One thing I've never understood about that supposed story . . . Why on earth would Stallworth's decision to declare for the draft have anything to do with what anybody else did?

Just curious but how many times have you spoken to KW? Must have been a heck of a convo to call him a scumbag.

I did not read the entire thread and I know nothing of the prospect who made the claim, but from my perspective unless you are over 6'2" with a 35"+ vertical leap and can run a 4.4/40 or better then yeah UTK is pretty much loaded and you should just go elswhere.

Don't interrupt the illogical, undeserved hatred of Kelly Washington by introducing logic into the conversation.

If a player doesn't come to UT because they are "afraid" they might not get playing time. THANK GOD they're not coming to UT. I hate having pansy players. I hate guys like Kelly Washington. I want competitive guys who think they're the best and thrive on competition.

Hell, the fact that Vareen told the guy "we're loaded you don't want to come here" seems like a test to me. I love that. Whether it was a test or not, I wish more people would approach recruits like that. That's how you separate the men from the boys.

1. Walker was never coming to UT.
2. He was likely seeing if he should even waste one of his official visits.
3. Vereen was just being an honest friend.
4. Poole will be a stud, but Vereen isn't shabby either.

mullet, part of the problem here is that for many years UTK has been operated on a you stay-you play system. In 2007, depth issues and some injuries forced opportunities for some freshmen but that is certainly not Phil's normal operating procedure. I think there is probably still alot of that union mentality permeating the upperclassmen on the Hill.

I must have been watching a different team this past season. We looked anything but loaded at WR.

So are you saying we had no receivers running wide open in the secondary or Erik's undisclosed injured shoulder made it impossible to throw the ball to the alleged open receivers?

I don't care if he was being honest or not you don't tell a prospective player, even if you are friends with them, not to come to a school because of other incoming players. Other players need to be recruiting other players instead of telling them not to come here. I think the coaches will reiterate this to the players and make sure this doesn't happen again.

I'd expect the same kind of response from a good friend of mine if I were wanting to go to a school. Obviously they aren't BEST friends, but just good friends so that isn't most important. The guy isn't a Vol lover so that is out. Granted he was very interested, but if he was just as interested in some other schools and has a chance to play early, go on.

Sure we could use all of the talent we can get, regardless of position, but he was just being honest.

It's still not up to Vareen to make a statement like that, that's the coaches jobs.

Listened to the clip for the 3rd time. Walker never said Vereen told him not to come.

From my understanding of it, Vereen only told him we were loaded.

I think there are things mentioned between the two that Walker didn't tell Hooker. I know I am ASSuming and all but it does make sense to believe that something other than a RS frosh making an assessment of incoming talent to a friend is the reason Walker isn't considering us. It's just suspect is all.
