I can remember practicing in this heat when they would not let us swallow water (believed to cause cramps back then). Made us wet our mouths and spit it out. They also gave us salt tablets to replace the salt we were sweating out. My how times have changed.

I was playing golf yesterday (Utah) and the humidity here has been about triple (or more) what it is normally. It was about 50-something per cent yesterday and felt stifling. Reminded me of home, or what used to be home...and then I thought, "this isn't even close to the humidity at home and yet it's killing me." It's still comparatively high here today (39%) and it makes a noticeable difference once you are used to it being dry all the time. On a visit, I would probably just collapse there now... after whining like a kid for a few hours.

I walked 9 yesterday in Kingsport and it was pretty hot when I started. It was about 7 when I finished so it wasn't too bad. I hate walking back home in Clarksville though. It always seems a lot hotter over there than it is in East Tennessee.

Untrue. I've worked outside in both, when it's Bad in TN is just as bad as LA and Tex.

I lived here in east texas the first 8 years of my life, and the last 3.....the rest were spend in the mountains of east tennessee......IMO its worse.....we just have to agree to disagree.

From my experience, Southern Texas heat in July/August is the worst. I worked in Brownsville and Matamoros, Mexico. No bueno to say the least.

They are not pansies out there. I played HS ball in the day that coaches would give you salt tablets, but no water in 2 practices a day. We practiced in pads and ran windsprints after practice. Nobody died and I can't remember anyone having heat exhaustion. There were some broken noses because we didn't wear face masks.
I am not saying bring back the "good" old days, but my goodness, this is football, not majorette or band practice. I am not against precautions and taking advantage of new knowledge of best practices, but c'mon now.

:cray:Two kids just died from heatstroke after practice in Georgia.

Our "band practices" are more intense than anything I've seen the damn football team do.

Unless you were carrying around a bass drum or tuba, shut it.

I don't give a crap if he was carrying around some of the gigantic flag waving chicks, he still needs to shut it. He's talking about band practice relative to two a days.

Our football team sucks, and gets too much respect.

Our band has been one of the best in East TN for a long time now, and we get no respect. That statement just pissed me off. :hi:

I know. I went through plenty in high school. I cringe every year on August 1 thinking about them. I can only imagine how much touger college would be.

I'm just saying that the only people that I will remotely have sympathy for in summer band camps are the tuba players and bass drum guys.
