98 vs 2001

Neither one is close to Peerless Price.
Peerless is clearly the best, I won't argue that.

Peerless Price (2nd rd NFL), Cedric Wilson (6th rd NFL), Jermaine Copeland (CFL), & David Martin (6th rd NFL).

Josh Palmer (3rd rd NFL), Jauan Jennings (7th rd NFL), M. Callaway (UDFA NFL), & Dominick Wood Anderson (UDFA NFL).

That's close.

It was better. We lost Peyton Manning, Leonard Little, Marcus Nash, Terry Fair, Trey Teague, Jonathan Brown, Corey Gaines, etc after the 97 season. We were absolutely stacked in 97.
What's always been weird to me is that LSU and UGA beat UF for us in 97 so Peyton got his SEC title which he otherwise would have been without in his time here and then those same two teams beat us in 01 in some sort of apparent cosmic trade-off and we were deprived of a natty as a result. Which brings up an interesting question, what would people have rather had, the natty in 01 or the SEC championship in 97? The natty is the first instinct but we did win it in 98 anyway, but it would have been pretty embarrassing to have had Peyton freaking Manning and never won so much as a division title with him. So I accept the 97 SEC, 01 Miami would have been tough to beat anyway.

It's a tough call, but I'd say the 98 team wins in a close one. It's probably a game that could go either way.

Both teams had some struggles at times.

2001 Arkansas held them to 13. SC held them to 17. They only beat a 2-9 UK team by 3. We may have gotten a break on a holding call in the back of the endzone against UF.

Anyway, the clincher for me is 98 would have Cut calling plays and 01 would have Sanders

Personally I didnt think anybody was beating Miami that year. That was one of the greatest college teams I had ever seen at the time. Talent wise, we probably stood about the best chance of anybody of challenging them but I still think head to head on a neutral field, that Miami team wins 7/10 times.

My biggest issue with 01 is HOW we went out against LSU. Look, theres no other way to say it, we went out like a b_tch in the SEC CG. It left such a sick feeling in my stomach that is still there today. We had absolutely no business losing that game! It felt very different from the 04 and 07 SEC CG's where we were underdogs but fought our asses off. I didnt feel as bad losing those games and in fact I was proud of how those teams fought.

Actually if we're going there, as much as the 2001 team is a haunting memory of what could have been, 1999 imo is worse. 2001 I still think we would have lost to Miami in the Rose Bowl; though I think we would have given them a much better game than Nebraska. But 1999, we the ball for a game winning drive in Gainesville and couldn't get it done. We couldn't put Arkansas away and they win.
1999 was Fulmer’s worst coaching job. Took a stacked defending NC team and needed a 3rd and long Hail Mary to beat Memphis tiggers by a point

Interesting. Why though? The 1995 Nebraska and 2001 Miami are considered 2 of the greatest football teams of all time. They literally demolished nearly every team they played. I would interested in hearing your opinions as to how we would have stood a chance with either team.
Miami had talent but we could’ve beaten them if we played great. Nebraska was just too stronger with a different style play and steroids

Arkansas was in the middle of a cold torrential thunder and wind storm. UK had several breaks to even be in that game. We didn’t get away with any call vs Florida and actually got screwed about 4 times from Refs

Not even close to top 5. Ridiculous.
Opinions are your own........Doesn't make it right.

I can only think of 4 other QB's I'd rather have ........

Manning
Clausen
Kelly
Holloway

Who would you rather have?

Streater
Scott
Dobbs? (maybe)
Brey
Warren

Great. He was a good manager of games and was lucky to have a massive running game and one of the best defenses in UT history. But as a QB he was above average at best. His completion % was pedestrian and relied on deep bombs to Price and Wilson as his go to

It's been a long time, maybe I dreamed it, just thought I remembered a jersey pull in the corner of the endzone on a 2 pt play. Thought I remembered saying to was makeup non call for the Gaffney non catch. Maybe I dreamed the whole thing.

Again, it's been a long time and maybe I forget all the lucky things that happened for UK. All I can remember is Lorenzen throwing for 400+ and having to come from behind. It seemed like I remembered feeling lucky to have won and that they had out gained us and we had little yards rushing. I remember for sure that they sucked and lost to someone like Indiana the next week.

I credit Fulmer for puting the roster together, I still think it's probably the best we ever had. I just remember feeling frustrated several times that we seemed to play down to other teams. Aside from Michigan and UF it seemed like we rarely played up to our talent level. Sad that team didn't even win the conference.

Shuler was runner up for the Heisman. If I’m starting a Team and have to pick a UT former QB as my starter, I pick all the following before Martin. As you can see I’m in the Martin is average at best camp. Definitely not a street named after him worthy.

Manning
Clausen (the good one)
Shuler
Bray
Holloway
Cockrill
Dobbs
Kelly
Scott
Robinson

Possibly Streater as well. Hard to tell with him because he had pretty average to below average wide receivers most of his career.

I loved Clausen's toughness but he sure had the luxury of a great line, two NFL receivers and a HOF tight end.

It's hard to compare eras and situations but I'd love to see what Dobbs or Hooker could do if dropped into that same situation.

What about Ainge? I think if Hooker has another solid year like last year he’ll move way up the list too. We have been blessed with a lot of good QBs. My argument was that Tee was better than an average QB but agree that he wouldn’t be in the top 5.

I still get mad thinking about how Fulmer/Sanders made zero adjustments on Alex Brown and let him live in the backfield. No double team, no TE put over him, nothing. Also that 4th down run call that took forever to develop.

Agreed 1000%! I remember screaming at my TV, saying "ARE WE GOING TO PUT ANYBODY ON #13?!?!" Also I believe he got away with a couple of offsides, as it looked like he took off before the ball was snapped on more than one occasion.

I 100% forgot Shuler..................That's on me.
Martin would be top 6.......I'm a moran.

Streeter and Robinson are two of my all-time favorites............but I'll take Tee over both.
Cockrell, Scott, and Brey???? Come on.

Bray was ten times the QB Martin was which is why he played longer in the NFL
