98 Vols vs 2011 LSU

If Jamal Lewis was healthy, I may take the 1998 Vols. Otherwise, I'd probably take LSU, but I'm not old enough to remember the 1998 team that well.
Henry carried the team - Lewis wasnt missed at all however the 98 team had several close calls (Syracuse, Arkansas and Missy st) LSU had 1 (Bama)

The thing that separates the 98 Vols team and the present Vols team is the fight. This team has no heart at all. I watched the highlight video and you could just see that every player wanted it. That's what we need back in Vol country. Not this youth bu!!sh!t. I'm sick of it. WE ARE TENNESSEE!!!!! Let's start acting like it

the 98 vols would lose to all 3 top teams in the west this year. they were a good team but a very blessed team.. lets be real. They were not dominant. They would have taken 4 losses with our schedule this year. 4th would be in their rematch with LSU in the SECC game. I don't care what the polls say LSU Bama and Ark are 123 in that order. Best 3 teams in nation you could argue Ark as 4th or 5th but no lower.

I believe th 97' team would stand a better chance honestly. As long as Nebraska has to keep their team from this year

Come on man...

98 team had a great defense. Yeah we had some close games. Syracuse being one, but McNabb was QB and he turned out to be pretty good behind center.

But to say we wouldn't be Arkansas this year is crazy.

2011 LSU. Also, it is my belief that the '96 and '01 teams were the best Tennessee teams I've ever watched.

'01 UT team would kill the '98 team.

My favorite to watch, most talented UT ... maybe ever?
I soooo enjoyed the 01 season.

We fumbled away an SEC championship and probable NC ... would've whipped Nebraska in the Rose Bowl, JMO.

But to answer the OP, I don't know, bad as I hate to say it, this year's LSU team is awfully good.

We would have played Miami in the Rose Bowl, and there's about a 1% chance we would have won that game.

LSU by far. We were lucky to play a very average FSU team missing their qb and we still struggled to put them away. If we had played K State or UCLA that year we may not have won it. The 01 team was better from top to bottom.

I think most of us love that 1998 team, but really, that was a team that was lucky as hell to win the national championship. Not that every team doesn't need some bit of luck, but '98 Tennessee needed a bucket full of it.

Not really. All they needed was Nutt and a bad play. Possible they still make it anyway

There were other instances. Beating Syracuse on a last second field goal and beating Florida in double overtime could have both gone the other direction.

It'd be close. UCLA, Florida State, and Ohio State all ended the regular season with 1 loss that year. Throwing Tennessee into that mix, we'd probably be sweating it out on selection day.

Beating very good teams is not "buckets of luck". Luck is a 5th down or a kicked pass in the endzone

Fine. It was an over-exaggeration. Still, 1998 Tennessee was luckier than a lot of teams that have won a BCS title.

You were correct, it was Miami, but we'd beat them too. We were too loaded to cover on offense. It was pick your poison. JMO

The UF game was not double OT. We kicked a FG, they missed a FG, game over.

And we were the last undefeated team in 98 (except Tulane). UCLA was undefeated that weekend, and lost a fantastic game to Miami (Egde had over 200 yds rushing I believe). Kansas St lost their opener to FSU. FSU had already lost in week 2 to NC St, and Ohio St lost a couple weeks earlier to Mich St.

We win that same weekend, and we were a shoe in to play in the 1st BCS Championship game. We loose that weekend, you're right, we probably get left out.

As a note, I always enjoy your posts, and almost always agree with them.
:salute:
