98 AR Game

Another interesting piece of useless info. The next game, when UK came to Knoxville, was the first game that the now discontinued beer barrel was not awarded to the games winner. There had been a fatality involving a uk player who was apparently under the influence so C.M. newton & Doug Dickey thought in the spirit of good taste they would forego the tradition that year and to my knowledge it has not been awarded since

I’m pretty sure that it had to pay property taxes in Knox Co. though.... since it stayed at UT for sometimes damn near 20 years straight!!

Man Arkansas had a hell of a day! Back to what I said about them losing to miss.st the following week and getting knocked out of the SECCG. Losing this one must have snatched their Souls!!! BWAHAHAHAHA

Guess I’m going to look up and see what happened to Arky after this game? It was late in the season and they would have had only one loss after this game. Never thought about it but maybe the crushing loss drained them for the rest of the season. Seems like an SECCG rematch would have been likely, but of course I was there in ATL. And don’t remember much except for the fact that The Vols played Miss. St.

Just used my google machine! WOW.... Arky actually lost to miss.st the game after this one. Both teams finished SEC play @ 6-2, with Miss. ST obviously holding the tiebreaker
Was nervous about facing them AGAIN.

One critical play near the end of this game that is never mentioned and where some very poor officiating occurred, happened with 3:04 left in the 4th quarter. Arkansas was leading 24-20 and was punting on 4th down and 1 from their own 40 yard line. Their long snapper, Benji Mahan, snapped the ball 10 yards over the head of their punter, Chris Akin, who then ran down the errant snap and kicked the ball through the Arkansas end zone. By rule, this was an illegal kick. Tennessee should have been given the option of taking the result of the play (a safety) or accepting the penalty and therefore (since it was 4th down) taking possession of the ball half the distance to the goal line from where the ball had been illegally kicked. That is the penalty under the rule following an illegal kick or batting - penalize half the distance to the goal and a loss of down. This would have given Tennessee possession at around the 4 yard line with under 3 minutes left to play in the game. Instead, the short black referee with the mustache and glasses threw the flag for the illegal kick but (inexcusably) didn't give Fulmer the option of accepting the penalty and declining the result of the play. Down by 4 points with so little time left, it would have been a no-brainer to take the ball at the 4... If that play had been officiated properly, we would not have needed the "Stoerner Stumble" to win this game.

Nice to see throw and catch with ease. OL sets this up but Tee was able to get it out pretty dang in quick no matter how long a throw.
It was a good throw. But the OL and WRs made Tee look better than he actually was. That throw also demonstrated how much faith Tee had in his WRs. Back then our WRs known forbwinning matchups. We dont have a WR now that even comes close to the group Tee had.

That last drive was like a '90s Nebraska drive where UT said, just like those Nebraska teams would tell u, "our offensive line are going to blow your DL off the line of scrimmage and we are going to run Travis Henry right down your throat and there is absolutely nothing u can do about it" and I loved it.

Travis Henry's ability to go up the middle is legendary.

I still can't believe it when people say Tee Martin is our best QB ever because he won a title. No doubt he had his moments, but he was not a skilled passer. And yeah I know about the USCjr game.

Here comes the play that I was talking about in post #31. Sean McDonough says that Chris Akin "alertly boots it through the back of the end zone" ... and Terry Donahue never corrects him. We should have had the option of taking the ball at the 4 yard line. This absolutely blew my mind. The short black guy calls the penalty correctly but then doesn't enforce it! Unreal.

Warning a little lengthy, but I think y’all will like it!
Here’s my experience at that very moment of the stumble/fumble
So my grandfather who is 88 and still bleeding orange bought his first of many season tickets in Q34 in 1964. I still sit in those seats .His first game he and his brothers rode a bus from Sparta to Knoxville to see UT beat Vanderbilt 45-0 in 1945. He and my grandmother did not miss a single game in at least 25 years. In ‘98 my grandmother got to a point where she could no longer go to the game. Many of you prayed for her and sent well wishes before she passed last November . As a result I got to go to all the games in 98 with my grandfather, and for a few years after. He got to the point where he did not want to leave her alone in Franklin while he was gone to the game.
Anyway at this very point he looked at me and said “let’s go!I’ve seen this sh$# my whole life and am not going to watch it now” Remember the Vols had been ranked all of 1 week. We parked in g5 back then, which is within spitting distance of the stadium. As soon as I put my hand on the car door handle it sounded like Neyland had exploded! We got in the car and turned on John Ward to find out about Stoerners fumble. My grandfather always liked to be on the road moving ASAP..... but out of the rain a guy in a poncho came running up to our car and said ‘“PLEASE OH PLEASE LET ME LISTEN”
My grandfather ,myself, and orange poncho man sat there listening to John Ward describe as only he could Travis Henry willing the Vols to the win. As we drove away my grandfather looked at me and said “Son, whatever you do don’t ever tell anyone that we were dumb enough to leave that game”.... I know I just broke the promise but I couldn’t think of a better place with better people to share that priceless memory with.

I'm not sure the announcers name but even today that dues voice still cracks during a huge play like the fumble i.e. Michigan vs Michigan State 2015 & Fsu VS Georgia Tech 2015

Watching this game, it’s incredible. We had so many top flight SEC studs all over the field. Feels like forever since that was the case. Praying that somehow, some way Pruitt will replicate Fulmer’s efforts and results from those 90s teams. Afraid I’ll never see that again in my lifetime.

Sean McDonough. His “he stumbled and fumbled” is a great, iconic call imo.
