Don't really know who Doak Raulston is, but he definitely has a big shoe to fit after our beloved legendary 4th QB: the one, the only, James Robert, aka "Jim Bob" Cooter.

Of the numbers that have been retired, I think they were all worn at some point between the time that the honoree graduated/left and when the number was actually retired. For example, Rashad Baker wore 16 and Justin Harrell wore 92 before they were retired in honor of other people. Not too big of a deal.

Just like Heath Shuler will always be 21. Da'rick has the number now, thats weird.

Raijon Neal has #21 too. There are also two #8's and a handful of other duplicates. Dont worry about the numbers right now. Having said that, I have no idea what they plan to do about any of that, but obviously some numbers are going to change.

What happens when you retire all the numbers?

There have been great players throughout the history of Tennessee that have worn just about every number

SOB!!! My algebra teacher was right. I may actually use those imaginary number thingies in life.

Personally, I don't think numbers should be retired. I guess my feeling is that no one player, not matter how awesome they were is bigger than the team as a whole. Also, I feel that by retiring a number they are saying no one in the future can ever represent that number better than this person. I just don't like that concept. Yes, remember and celebreate the players in history who wore those numbers, but let other players try to represent those numbers also. Just my 2 cents.

Manning, White, and Atkins should all have their numbers retired for their play on the field. They represent everything you can ask for out of a player at their position. Nothing wrong with having a reminder for younger players what standard they have to equal to be considered a legend. Berry should probably be retired along side those numbers also. Nowling, Klarer, Tucker, and Fuson should also have their numbers retired for their sacrifice not just for their university but for their country.

What better way to remind younger players of that standard by giving them the privilage of wearing those numbers, knowing what they represent. Just my opinion.

A Ring of Honor works just as well.

Not college, but the Pittsburgh Steelers have never retired a single number and have had many hall of fame players and I have never heard the fans complain about not having any jerseys retired, FWIW.

i would honor great atheletes with murals or statues, like the greeks, but would not retire numbers. the vols might need them in 2010 when they play the hated university of Mars.

Got to graduate from UT to get your # retired... There's a whole list of stuff.

If he had stayed, I would be saying the same thing. Since he didn't, it's just another number.

Now it's the DOAK'S!

Knowing EB's ethic, he will get his degree from UT when his playing days are over. You're right, untill then its anyones number.
