I remember that optimistic feeling at that time. The options and bright future that laid ahead. Feeling that again!
Ainge won the job during the Florida game. Schaeffer was an athlete playing QB. When it came down to passing, he fell short. What he did at Ole Miss as the undisputed starter should be the final verdict. It sugged when Schaeffer got hurt (and Ainge). But, it also was a downer when Phil started Ainge. Shaeffer never lost as starter. Not saying he was better. But defenses had a mess to deal with when BS took a snap. It's like they need two schemes to deal with which QB Phil was gonna trot out. Fun!
QBs transferred back then a bunch as well. There is nothing new to players transferring, they always have. Only real difference from today and then is they now have basically a website that let's other programs know they are available in the portal.Would like to have another Pro style QB to redshirt but kids today expect to play day one. How did the Bear, Switzer, Osbourne & Bowden handle this?

You're right but I tell you what, Tennessee was absolutely losing the South Carolina game until Fulmer changed QB's in the second half and brought Brent in. His athleticism kept SC's defense off balance the rest of the day and it completely changed the momentum of the game.Ainge won the job during the Florida game. Schaeffer was an athlete playing QB. It worked against UNLV...and never again. He was useful in the SC comeback because Ainge was having a true freshman game. But against Florida it was established that Ainge was the better QB. If you have two starters you don’t have one.Oh, I know. Not saying BS was better. I just thot it was awesome having him be the "Starter" and having the opposing DC have to design a spy and contain all week. Then on drive 3 bring in Ainge to shred that defense. Of all the UF games I've watched since 1990, that 2004 game (and maybe 06' where we got robbed) was the only one where it appeared that our "swag" was greater than UF and they seemed to be on their heels. I think the mixed QB styles had a lot to do with it.
That's where you want to be realistically in your recruiting, and not just QB, but especially at QB. Hat's off to a recruit if he comes here and tries to gain a spot in the pecking. Nothing negative toward a recruit if he has to transfer and try somewhere else. A majority of recruits, regardless of where they sign have to establish their pecking order for the remainder of their time, be satisfied where they are, or move on. the guys that know they are special teams or support roles their 4 year career generally stay on roster. The ones that can be starters somewhere in P5 but didn't win it here or wherever will move on. as long as we get recruiting back to this level each and every year, we can fill those gaps and reload. We have good QBs but think we lose 2 to the portal.
I think Pruitt has played the QB position perfectly, both on the field and in recruiting. I believe we've got one of if not the best QB rooms in the SEC.That's where you want to be realistically in your recruiting, and not just QB, but especially at QB. So, yes, we are loaded now, and the next year or two for QB's on roster and coming in. And we needed to be. Haven't had an elite stable to choose a natural #1 and #2 from in a long time. Some will stay, some will take it elsewhere because they are good enough, but sometimes you may just not be able to unseat and established good QB and/or the #2, yet you could be a #1 down the road. No harm. No foul. If I got it right, we have 5 on roster now, two more coming in 2020, and atleast one more in 2021. What I hope we get to is that we don't have to look for a QB to bring in each and every year.
So, what do we have now...
JG
BM
JTS
the Maryland guy
And one other ??
Plus HB and Holliday coming in this year. Maybe one more
And so far this 2021 recruit
???
Good times coming.
