4 Dollar Gas

Is there a lot of difference with Kroger, Meijer or Giant Eagle gas in comparison to BP, Exxon or Shell?

the truck it comes in. there is a large tank farm in Knoxville, I've seen Shell, BP, Pilot, Exxon tankers at each of the various loading points. The tank farm is fed by the Colonial Pipeline which comes up out of the Gulf Coast.

additives like Chevron's techroline are added locally. I used to pull a chemical tanker, and one of our customers was Flying J truck stops. We carried the fuel additive they use in their diesel fuel.

obviously you know more than me. But whatever additives Shell adds work for both me and my father. I've tried Appco, BP, Exxon, Shell, Wal-Mart brand and Food City brand. I get better gas mileage by with Shell. I've tried most of them multiple times just to guarantee, but Shell typically gets me about 4 mpg than any other brand, and that's with 87, which is what Toyota recommends for my Corolla.

My father used to tell me I was crazy, but he told me a few weeks ago he's discovered the same thing.

can you elaborate please?

I read his post to say you should just be happy you can afford a hummer and a boat since he can't, nor can I. I don't understand how someone saying don't complain about having to pay more for the luxuries of life if you still can afford them is making a senseless post.

Sure. Of course I'm grateful that god-given abilities, years of study, and some help along the way have afforded me the luxury of owning a car and a boat.

But, my point is that gas is damned expensive. Actually, it rings even truer if you are pressed for cash. I just don't understand the notion that one should sit back and be fine with skyrocketing gas prices simply because you have worked hard and become able to afford a few amenities.

My initial post would have been the same if I drove a Hyundai.

that's where I have issues. Hyundais are designed with fuel economy in mind and the engines are designed so that 87 is the best option for them. I'm not going to feel sorry for you because you choose to drive a Hummer that gets 8 mpg or a sports car that requires high octane fuel. I'm really not going to feel sorry for you that you "had" to fill your boat up. We all know gas is higher than it ever has been here. If it's that big of a deal, don't go boating.

Does anybody else get 10cents off a gallon of gas, for every $50 you spend at the grocery store?

The Kroger on Northshore has a deal like that. BUT. . . .I would have to drive 20 miles round trip to get the "deal." Washes out.

I hope that the new Kroger they are building in Farragut will have a gas station. That will make it a reasonable option.

Another point: I'm tired of the marina jacking prices up just because they can. It costs them the same (as far as I can tell) to buy gas. I know it is a "sellers market," but crap. $4.45?

Well, then, I'm not going to feel sorry for you that you can't afford a nice car or a boat.

Again, my point is that gas prices are getting painful. It has hurt the lower and middle classes even more than those more fortunate. The vacation industry is struggling, and grocery prices are rising, if you need further evidence. I have friends with pontoon boats and houseboats who aren't even taking them out due to the costs.

BTW, my car gets 26-27 mpg on the road, which is much higher than many "family cars/SUVs."

i never complained in the first place and just so you know, you're still losing 10-12 mpg on my car that fills up with 87

And, I never complained that my car only gets 19/27 mpg or that my boats eats gas like tic-tacs. Again, my complaint is that gas is steep. I don't care if you drive a Princess Yacht, a Hummer, a VW Beetle, or a lawnmower. It sucks to fill up right now.

:peace:

but like dan4vols said, you could be doing much much worse, so there is no reason to complain. Be happy with what you have and that you aren't paying 10 bucks a gallon

come on Bill. People's complaints are all on a relative basis. Saying that the wealthy have nothing to complain about makes no sense. I think we all understand the sentiment, but paying $4 for a commodity that we've paid under $2 for forever sucks across the board.

I'll complain when I want to complain. AND. . .my biggest complaint is for the people who can't afford $3.80/gallon to get to work, or their kids to school or doctor appointments.

Post back when you are smiling at the gas pump.

disagree. It sucks, but it's life. If it's so bad you're going to complain about, find ways to cut out having to buy it. Don't go boating. Don't buy high octane fuel. I've cut down my iTunes spending and stalled on buying a few new clothes and hats because I really don't need them, but I need gas money to get me to work, the golf course and anywhere else I want to go.

Thanks for the hint of relativity. I just don't understand how a reasonable notice of price inflation suddenly turns into a war upon the bourgeoisie.

you're the one buying gas like there's no tomorrow and then complaining about it. Do something about it instead. Go kayaking.

I have a Giant Eagle 5 minutes from my house, so that is convenient, though there grocery prices aren't the cheapest around. I'm not one to drive all over town to shop for the deals.

my kids' pediatrician's bills are absurdly expensive and often incomprehensible. to make matters worse, my ridiculously expensive health insurance makes it obscenely difficult to get claims paid. I'm fortunate enough to afford the care and the insurance so my kids are well taken care of. Can I not complain about the prices on both fronts or should I step down the level of care?

My point is that we all complain from the basis of our own lives, not those of people in Namibia or other lands. By your argument, nobody but the least fortunate people on earth can complain.

like i said before, if it's too expensive, cut out some unnecessary fat from your spending. If kiddiedoc had any ability to comprehend, that would be called doing something about it and not being lazy.

BPV, you can thank the insurance companies and the MCOs for that. I can speak for the docs that it certainly isn't us making your bills ridiculous and incomprehensible. And, I would encourage you to phone your insurance company and vouch for fairer compensation, encouragement to avoid emergency room care, unless necessary, and a discount pharmacy plan (with an emphasis on generic drugs).

I'm not blaming anyone, especially the docs. I'm a firm believer that the payor system in our country is squeezing the best and brightest out of the medical profession.
