Can’t blame him too much if it is double the salary to be honest. It’s pretty rare for people to turn that downI’m guessing the idea of roster continuity is just dead in the portal era now. Sad. You support a guy like JP through 2 tough injuries and he bails the first chance he gets.
I told yall we would have a premature meltdown. Simpletons , some of these people. It’s like they think Tennessee has to play next season with the current roster . They can actually sign more players per rules.Quick…everyone panic!!! Nobody has ever transferred out of UT before.
All seriousness, the portal isn’t even open yet. Panic time isn’t until about late May or early June. Good grief!
We need both a rim protector and a guy with some post moves.I think we'll be alright. JP was a volume layup guy who was fairly productive on offense while making a relatively low percentage of his layups, an average defender and a bad shooter. We need a rim protector who can make his layups and free throws.
I feel like many of us are getting hung up on the crazy numbers being thrown around and not accepting the new reality of $NIL. Guys like JP are worth what the market says they’re worth. JP isn’t some unicorn that everyone is salivating to add to their roster, he’s simply a nearly 7’ tall guy with proven post scoring abilities and you aren’t advancing very far in March without some of those type players. There’s tons more small forwards and guards out there to choose from. We have 2 choices as I see it, pay what it takes to get JP to return or find someone like him who we think is a better value. Anyone saying “I ain’t paying JP that kind of money” needs to include “because we can get (other guy) who’s a better value. I’ve yet to see anyone name a few (other guys) than JP.Totally agree. The problem basically came up two years ago; we might have made a final four if Estrella was healthy but he was out for the year and then we didn’t have an inside threat
And I should say I really like Estrella’s talent and do think he would be hard to replace (a lot of our fans are too low on his actual talent), I just have concerns spending double the initial evaluation with the injury history
ThisThis is what I'm thinking also. The Tennessee medical staff knows JP's medical situation better than anyone else. These schools offering JP all this money without any medical information or the opportunity to make him do a physical prior to signing him is crazy. He had issues with his foot again this year.
Shot 60%. Regardless of layups, he has well above average offensive skill.I think we'll be alright. JP was a volume layup guy who was fairly productive on offense while making a relatively low percentage of his layups, an average defender and a bad shooter. We need a rim protector who can make his layups and free throws.
I stated after the fact that I hoped they would be wrong bc as a fan I really wanted to keep JP and Evans. I also had a soft spot for Cade just bc of his effort. However, I don’t think these decisions are being made on our end bc we don’t have the money. I think we are simply offering what we feel is fair. Which tells me, that we think we can do better than Estrella for the price he is wanting. That’s me reading into it. I was simply told those 4 were long shots to return. I haven’t spoken to anyone in a few days and I’m not going to pry for info bc it’ll come out soon enough regardless. So far you've nailed 2 of them. Your sources may have been better than what some were thinking
I think the asking vs offering perspective is important here. If he's getting an offer for $3 million, likely anybody who can beat him is already seeing similar offers. Maybe we wouldn't offer that for him, but we have to be willing to offer that to someone.Big fan of JP...but against better frontcourts he vanished mostly.
vs Michigan 3 of 9 for 7 points
vs Iowa State 2 of 8 for 6 points
at Kentucky 4 of 13 for 11 points
Ultimately having to "light a fire" just get him to rebound at a high level or defend with some energy probably got tiring for staff.
61 career games, only 5 times did he reach double digit rebounds and only 6 times did he hit 15 or more points
Nate went for 15 or more in 23 of 35 games
Carey went for 10 or more rebounds 6 times in his 37 games here
Felix hit 10 or more rebounds in 5 games this season too & 15 or more points in 4 games
What I'm saying, as good as JP is when he's on there still is room to upgrade at that spot especially for the sort of price tag JP was likely asking.
Your last sentence is the key here from my point of view.Big fan of JP...but against better frontcourts he vanished mostly.
