2026 Vols Transfer Portal Thread

Doesn’t really say anything. “No team has emerged as the clear front runner… Rick Barnes was in contact with him Monday night and we expect Malone to be in contact in the near future”
Sounded like Michigan was still the perceived front runner. Chance UNC makes a push here, as well. I haven't seen much in the last couple days though

I'm kinda with you. There's some Mack doesn't do well, but you could do a lot worse at guard, but you'll need to surround him with real scoring.

I feel like PG is the most "either or" type position...you either get a guy that can facilitate or score, rarely do you really get someone that can do both.

Tanner is a Unicorn in that regard...48.5% FG, 36.8% 3PT 85.3%FT with 19.5ppg & 5.1apg is basically a cheat code HE is the reason Vandy had the season they did.

SEC only had 4 guards dish out 5 apg and score 18 or more....2 of them are going to be first round draft picks (Acuff & Philon) and the other 2 are Ja'Kobi and Tanner

Big 10 only had 5 players average 5 apg, and of those 5 none of them scored 18 ppg
Big 12 just Christian Anderson of Texas Tech did it
Big East only had 2 players average 5apg none scored 18 ppg
ACC only Kevin Miller from SMU did it

So really...if you can't land Tanner, the next PG option is going to be a step down...doesn't make them average, just highlights how elite Tanner is and WHY we're playing the wait and see with him.

I feel like both those guys are score first PGs, neither has assist numbers over 5, both take a ton of shots, especially Wright, they’re both more so in the Gillespie mold rather than the Zeigler or Fears mold. I can see a world in which they coexist, time will tell.
I guess, if the measure of true PG is 5 apg, then yeah. Only 4 PGs in the SEC averaged 5 or more. Wright played on a team that had 3 players take the majority of shots (68% of them). He was one of those guys.

Point being, I think they coexist only if one is content not being the starting PG. I don't believe that is likely. I guess we will see. Money talks and UK has a lot of it, so maybe one of them sees dollar signs and doesn't care.

I don't quite hate Mack as much as many on here, but I also dont love the fit, especially in terms of his shooting %s and defense. Very good FT shooter and a 2:1 asst to TO ratio, but poor shooter from 2 and 3 and the defense isn't great, at all. I'd like to see us exhaust a lot of other options before settling on him.
With Ames and Lunblade already in the bag - I'd really want a high level defender if we can't get Tanner. That would give you a chance to play Ames and Lunblade together at least. Can't play 3 bad defenders together though.

What’s the deadline with Tanner looking like?

If the reports are true we’re going all in with him, I don’t know what else Barnes could do besides wait?

Thats my hesitation

I like what Basilio just say that their plan B is someone else out there as well not in portal yet possibly. They have a big bag for that spot.
Probably won’t have much choice but to do that since current portal guys that are top caliber will be pretty far along by the time a decision is made.

Personally just want one absolute stud regardless if it's PG or wing. Seems like vols have the money just need someone to take it.

April 21st. That's the portal closing date. If he's not in by then it's NBA or playing for Vandy.

Totally agree. Tanner instantly makes us one of the best teams in the country.

Cruz Davis might be that dude...

102.6 defensive rating in 95 games

past season he was a 20.1ppg, 4.7apg, 3.2rpg, 1.1spg player that shot 44% FG, 40% 3PT and 83% FT at Hofstra. 6'3" and he played 2 seasons with Rick Pitino.

You clearly haven't watched in a long time. The product - setting the tanking aside - is incredible. And the defense is very good, which makes the skill level needed to score the amount of points teams are scoring now truly a sight to behold.

"all about the money...Money talks" Funny comment to make in the portal thread when we're all talking about how much money we and other schools are throwing at players who almost by definition aren't good enough to play in the NBA (otherwise they'd be going to the draft).
Exactly. Why there is chance nate may comes back …. Nope don’t pay attention a lot to the
NBA like I used to. And i am sports freak .

I never liked the NBA. Born in LA. Dad was a huge Lakers fan. I never liked the selfish isolation basketball and the lack of effort on defense.

Started watching Thinking Basketball a couple years ago and it totally changed my perspective. The style of play and effort is night and day today compared to what it was in 2010. Offensive movement is absurd, the tactics defenses use to catch up are equally impressive if you know what to look for.

Still can't come close to college sports for me, but I stopped saying "the NBA doesn't play defense" a while ago.

Wonder if Barnes would take both Cruz and Edmead...interesting to see each is on our list and played together at Hofstra.

Both can score and distribute, Cruz has more size and a better defensive game...but Edmead has 3 years left and more upside...
