If there aren’t some serious reforms in this process, there is going to be a mass exodus of coaches and support staff across all of the major revenue sports. This is not sustainable.
Binding contracts between schools and players with enforceable buy-out clauses are the obvious next step. Players can still be protected by defining acts that automatically allow them to opt out (e.g. head coach change).
But at the end of the day, the coaches are getting screwed in the current state of affairs. They can’t focus on coaching if from one day to the next they don’t know who’s on their team.
