The other complicating factor for basketball is they might go to 15 scholarships instead of 13. Realistically, Mashack won’t have a spot, but ZZ and Gainey might.

It all depends on the effective date and moving forward from there. I don't look at it being retroactive. I look for it to happen in the future, but the NCAA is the NCAA and they will manage to screw up the verbiage and lawsuits will ensue.

Nate Ament is the top high school recruit left on the board for the 2025 recruiting cycle. He recently narrowed his list to a top five that includes Arkansas, Duke, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Louisville. Talking with people around this recruitment, things have been fluid among the top schools. I am told that the three schools currently with the most momentum continue to be Louisville, Kentucky, and Duke.

I would be very surprised (shocked, even) if UK landed him. In fact, Ament is not being discussed at all in UK recruiting circles. We have nearly a full roster, especially in the front-court. I stay pretty plugged into the UK portal convo and Ament's name hasn't come in weeks, either from the base in general or the insiders. With that said, I would swap us with Arkansas. They haven't added anything in the portal and what they have returning/coming in from HS is guard-heavy. The need is there and Cal still has a few tricks up his sleeve. If I had to bet, however, it would be Duke.

This is a Duke and Tennessee battle. Seems like, as of now, it would be 50% Duke, 35% Vols, 10% Louisville and then the field

We’re absolutely in this. There are three apples. We’re the orange. If he chooses us, it is a distinctly different value proposition.

We have a set of donors who have agreed to fund this outside our existing budget. That gives us freedom to swing at this with no downside. In the last few days, Barnes did a call with his parents and a visit with Ament and them a second time. They included a plan to build his draft profile. Hard to overstate how much they like the idea of their son being here. They believe the pitch that we can increase his stock in the draft by developing his body, defense and pro skills. They have a whole pitch built around what they did for DK and Chaz. No one knows if we can weather a final push by Duke money, but we are still very alive. People keep saying he’ll take two more weeks to decide, but I think it will be much sooner. At least that is what staff believes from talking to him.

Why is this interesting math? I’m not an insider, im just guessing from my opinion. The final 5% I think are UK and Arky having little chance.

DK and Chaz are paying bigger dividends than any recruit Barnes has ever had! Guys like Grant who is on the back burner never get mentioned, but the fact that Coach Barnes made him into an NBA player and a multimillionaire should be brought up more.

I agree. I’m sure GW is in the presentation. DK is just in the news and in their minds, and Chaz is someone they can talk to live.

Could some of the guys we're after - Rice, Freeman, Ament - be waiting on one of the others to jump in first? To make sure they are joining a team with a chance to do something in March?
