Freshmen players at this level just don't seem to move the needle for most teams. Really need to focus NIL on portal players with experience if you want to succeed in MarchMatthew Able the top 50 SG recruit is where our NIL money should be going with Gillespie. From what I have read we are one of favorites and no one is talking about him.
This morning, coaches returned from Gillespie visit. Things seemed fine with McNeely. He is using American Studies as a potential pre-law track and wanted to find a comparable track since we wound down American Studies significantly. They were working through that and we got a call that Louisville had offered him double the NIL. We’re pretty disciplined about using an ROI formula on players, but the number he would’ve been paid is significantly more than anyone on the current roster, DK or Chaz. It didn’t work. Louisville is trying to spend their way into a FF next year, no holds barred. It’s hard to overstate how crazy this **** is getting. Certain programs are blowing the lid off the comps. We lead by quite a bit for Gillespie. It’s a Lanier analog— great family, native, Vol fans, wants to com home, loves Barnes. Everything says we are way in front, but I am really creeped out about how fast we lost McNeely, and can’t rule out someone dropping a bomb on JG. It’s bad for the sport, and getting worse. I am not sweating Barnes’ ability to sign a great portal class, but I’m really discouraged about where things are headed.
Another reason to not waste brain waves on recruiting and the portal. Just enjoy who shows up on the roster on gameday and cheer for them. This morning, coaches returned from Gillespie visit. Pratt isn’t getting any younger and my hope was he would see Barnes as the best chance for Tennessee basketball and would fund the sport like some other boosters are at other places, that doesn’t seem to necessarily be the case. Or maybe it’s the basketball staff side holding that up and sticking to their formulas, but realistically those are outdated probably every 3-4 months and need readjusted in this current climate. We definitely have not adjusted to the current situation. Not many coaches could bring in DK, Chaz or Gillespie at the numbers we spent. Whoever the new guy is after CRB will ask for a huge NIL number. Wish we’d just give it up now.
