2025 Transfer Portal Thread

I don’t have any intel on this matter so don’t anybody take what I’m saying as insider or think it’s a hint, I’m just talking out loud and giving some material during a slow time…

From the high school ranks 2 guys would make sense…Alijah Arenas & Brayden Burries. Both are at schools that have added quite a bit through the portal and maybe that has changed their view on those schools from how they saw them a couple months ago. Either one probably walks into a starting spot and 25-30mpg here. Obviously we recruited Burries for a long time so that relationship is there, I’m unaware of any Arenas connection, but he appears to be unsigned still and as I said would make sense in many ways as far as fit.

Isn't the Arenas thing just because he was in a coma? As far as I know, he never de-committed from USC, and they fully intend to honor his scholarship no matter what. You're plugged in, and I'm not, but I'd be surprised if he's even an option.

That was my immediate thought as well. The most recent reports indicate that he has recovered and has been attending practice at USC.

I didn’t claim he de-committed, I mentioned he never signed with them, and that was well before the coma deal…now that doesn’t mean he is looking around, it just means he’s not as tied down to USC as guys who are signed, and because of that I mentioned him.

I've heard some rough stuff coming out of USC, I think they will have people transfer before the season at this rate.

"Toxic" was the one word response I got from someone that was close to Rice situation.
The players honestly got nobody to blame but themselves. You voluntarily roll around in the mud. You get muddy.

Says who?
My question also.

I get that on paper we ended up short of what we went after at the 2-spot.

But is it known for sure that we don’t have enough pieces?

It’s certainly easy to envision a bleak version of next year. But I don’t see that’s the bleak version is guaranteed yet, from the outside looking in.

We don’t need Abram to be Knecht if Ament and Gillespie are what we hope they are…if they are we just need Abram to be a 3pt guy, sophomore/junior type Santi, take around 8 shots from 3 a game and hit 37%+

we desperatly need to add another guard
Can’t shout this enough. Frankly, I’m getting quite concerned it hasn’t happened yet. We simply don’t have enough back there as it currently stands.

If i may chime in please... my opinion on our roster breakdown:
●Center - ✅⬆️ we get a healthy JP Estrella & a better more developed version of Felix Okpara. We have upgraded.
●Power Forward - ✅⬆️ we get a more developed confident version of Cade Phillips who is primed to rise up as well as a tough as nails Jaylen Carey. With Dewayne Brown & Nate Ament able to positionally cover we have easily upgraded here as well!
●Small Forward - ✅⬆️ don't get me wrong I love Mashack, but we have a potential 20 point go to scorer here who has defensive versatility and length as well. Our all time highest rated recruit alone is an upgrade at this position. We also have Amari , Boswell & potentially Massamba to be able to fill in here. And Evans + Boswell both gives us versatile capable defenders in Mashacks absence. We have upgraded here.
●Shooting Guard - ⚠️❌️ the only clear cut downgrade. But get this. Every year it seems wd have a position on the wing (with a role) not focused on scoring. This year that role will be at the 2, like in the Knecht year with Vescovi clearly fitting into more of a role. Not 1 of us knows what the development & contribution of (Amaree, Evans, Boswell or Massamba) will look like. If 2 of these 4 guys are consistent reliable contributors - we are in good shape. Boswell can lock down on the wing. Amaree has already stated he will play the role he is asked to play and do what it takes to win for the team. Also Evans is a complete boss defensively - who knows - Evans could be a 15-20 minute guy as a freshman & that would be a huge contribution.
●Point Guard - EVEN. We have more real point depth. We have a proven top 10 PG in the country who can defend & score at a higher percentage and efficiency than Z. We take a dip defensively, but Ja'Kobi is not a joke on defense either and has more size. Add in Troy Henderson who "could" be better than people think. I say this is even with a slight edge offensively & with depth & a slight decline defensively.

Are we really worried about our team this year? Only thing to be concerned about is - will all ofvthe guys be locked in as a unit & tight knit & contribute to our chemistry & great culture. The skill & talent is here!!!

I personally just don’t think there’s enough scoring unless we add someone at SG. If Gillespie and or Ament have an off night we will struggle tremendously IMO. Also believe it’s not a good recipe to rely on Ament when we are in SEC play to be the #1 or #2 option every single night

Wasn’t that the case with Zeigler & Chaz last year though? If you’re being honest, offensively:
Gillespie > Zeigler
Abram < Chaz
Ament > Mashack
Carey > Milicic
Okpara > Okpara (even if just a smidge)

To take is a step further, our starting 5 last year averaged: 54.1ppg.

4/5 projected starters this year averaged:
42.1ppg

So can Ament give you 12+ppg? I would think that’s a low bar, similarly, that’s not accounting for any improvement from Okpara, which again seems like there should be at least a small step forward.

The goal is, will our opponents consistently outscore us? Let's say we have nights we struggle offensively... will our opponents struggle offensively.

Who will SCORE THE MOST POINTS, is what we are looking to accomplish. That is done with a combination of offense + defense my friend

We always have good enough defense to win, offense has been what’s held us back

We also had Gainey scoring punch last year too. Our front court could definitely ease some of the scoring issues but it also will be tougher on them if we don’t have enough guys to stretch the floor and hit from 3
