At the risk of encouraging a sense of false hope or a false sense of (Legion of) Doom, we are doing a zoom with Rice today, and another one with Miles. I don’t understand why Rice hasn’t made a call yet, but hopefully will resolve in the next couple of days.
Sounds promising. Barnes is smart enough to know what he needs to get us over the top. Chaikin or Miles as a secondary bench piece would be nice.

Don't give us that hopium, might get too high

In my opinion, the California state tax is just a part of the difference between the money in CA vs TN. The other issue, and quite possibly largest difference, is in cost of living.

Ya know it’s actually a funny question I don’t have the answer to.

Since NIL, do any major athletes live on campus anymore?

He’s probably only going to be there for a year or two and I suspect it’s not $700,000 a year more expensive to live in LA than Knoxville unless he really likes Nobu

If he shot 48% from the 3, then he should have been the first pickup... Do whatever is necessary to get this kid... we're building the other pieces, it would be awesome to pick up a 3 sniper...
Really want that kid. It's not like he was 48% on really low volume. Like, he shot over 5 3's a game, and he was just a freshman. In his last 7 games, he was a combined 28-49 from 3, including 8-10 in his very last game in the Patriot League tournament against the conference champ. I'm sure he's got things in his game to clean up, like it looks like he turned it over too much, but if he wants onto our roster, I hope we don't slow play him.

Presumably he’d be taxed less than that.

Without looking I’m confident it’s a progressive tax meaning the 12.3% would only apply on income earned over a certain figure etc…

So I’d assume he is likely only paying like $250k in California taxes
Yes only 9 states use a flat tax for state income tax. California is not one of them. The state income tax in California is progressive.

How dare our coaching staff participate in a Zoom call with the guy that is toying with our fans fragile emotional state. The coaching staff should be ashamed. If they had spent the requisite amount of time perusing social media and volnation they would know that fans have moved on from Rice and no longer want to pursue him because he chose to........gasp.......explore multiple options for where he will play next season!!!!

Perhaps Rice is hoping for a last hour bump in his offer from the program he really wants to join? All this delay and visiting could just be playing the leverage game? The visit by Miles could be a plan B and/or our response to the leverage play? Seems like a reasonable assumption to this old mind.

The question I have is can he get the open looks or get his shots against the caliber of defender/athlete he'll be facing at this level?

Yeah I am not sure why our fans misjudge this so badly. Cost of living is very impactful when moving my family to California and residing there for the next 5 years. It is very low impact on a young man who will be there for 1 or 2 years during which time he will reside in a residence hall on campus and use the college facilities for most all of his needs.

Watching his film, that is a very valid concern. If he is a culture fit and the kid is willing to bet on himself and be a last man on the roster player for a year to see how it goes then sign him up.

I really like Nobu. Yes cost of living is the other fantastical specter often sold here. His meals are coming from the school, as is his housing. His cost of living it probably split between a pineapple vape and some fuzzy car seat covers.

They amount of open looks he would get with Ament and Gil, sheeeeeesh we need him
I thought Vescovi would go off when teams had to pay so much attention to Knecht. Didn't happen. Felt the same with the pairing of Igor and Lanier. Some kids find the jump up to the SEC a bit too high and they just don't make that transition in year one. Others just lose their mental edge and fold up. Really hard to know what any kid from HS or a lower level will do when they get into this league.

Hopefully that’s resolved today

Rice: got a new offer?

Barnes: yes…..bye

Well, I have lived in both states. I'm not going to use that as a basis, though, since it was so long ago for either. Just using a very basic cost of living calculator online, as a single person you would have to make almost $3.4 million per year to have a similar lifestyle in Los Angeles as in Knoxville. Granted, housing is a large part of that but that calculator also doesn't use state tax in it's calculation. I'm also not claiming that there would be a $1 million per year difference between the two places, simply that the cost of living difference is a reality and may even outweigh the state tax differential. I also make no claims that any of this is actually considered by a young adult when making decisions.

I’ve had some pricey Nobu meals in Malibu, but that could only add ~$75k, if he eats there every day for a year, just paying for himself. Hell, starting to convince myself he should just go to USC, if he’s smart.

Disclaimer: not an accountant

You may be right but I'm going to guess there are lot of other things a young millionaire can find to spend money on in Los Angeles vs Knoxville besides Nobu.
