2025 Transfer Portal Thread

only thing about Chaikin is I hope he’s not a replacement for Freeman or Rice. I’d like to add him in addition to those guys. Chaikin will only be a sophomore this upcoming season.

He'd be the "him or Passmore" I believe.

They're trying to add guys with 2 or more years to play behind Ja'Kobi, Rice and likely Freeman/Ament but also guys that can come off the bench and still give you good minutes (like Gainey last year).

A lot of you still talk about taking the highest $ offer like it’s some moral failing and it really makes me wonder about your own careers.

Are you clocking in everyday as accountants/data analysts/insurance salesmen/whatever for the love of the game or do the salary and benefits come into consideration?

I'm not making the most $ where I am if that's what you're asking.

I did however take a job with a company that offered more long term security, closer to home, known brand in my field, less stressful, and good co-workers/supervisors.

This is especially true for middle of the road players like Jonas Aidoo and Tobe Awaka. They will never make more now than right now.

You're just asking for people to lie to you lol.

Sports Fandom is inherently emotional. So a byproduct is some pretty intense levels of cognitive dissonance regarding topics like this.

It certainly shouldn’t be the only factor and it sounds like you took a lot of other things into consideration and found a good fit for you.

But even when I was picking a college the scholarship offers were a major influence, and I’m talking about an extra few hundred bucks a semester for textbooks and food (beer), not “buy my mom a beach house” difference like these guys are considering.

Here's the thing...if they're looking at UT they're not being offered pennies on the dollar compared to other programs.

In basketball we're in the top 10 to 12 in NIL offers. We're frugal, but we're not cheap.

Wasn’t trying to be a prick. I understand no one bats 1.000.. just thought it was funny how that narrative ended up being totally off base. Seems you have good info most of the time.

“I’m sowwwy I promise I wasn’t being prickkkkk :(

I'm sorry but I hate this analogy lol. It's a terrible idea to only pursue employment based on the level of pay alone-plenty of people chase dollar signs and end up at a miserable job and dread waking up every morning. Plenty of people are content staying at a lower paying job that gives them plenty of time off, good benefits, and security. In theory, this could also mean a kid who pursues a school due to their massive NIL deal alone ends up in an awful situation and never gets a chance at anything better.

so sick of this analogy. It doesn’t even make any sense in the context of college athletes anyway.

I just watched a few videos of him from this season. It is certainly interesting.

If you are the coaching staff, you see:

Positives
-Good height
-Very good wingspan
-Elite catch and shoot
-Very good at understanding how set up defender and use screens (big criteria for how we run offense)
-High IQ as a passer

Then the question is how much can you add to his strength (he needs to add a lot) and once you get him on an elite weight/plyo/agility routine with our trainers how much can you add to his explosiveness? That is not an answer you can fully know in advance. With all the traits that he already has, you can hit a home run in a couple years if hits the top end of possible projections for strength and explosiveness. Some gamble there obviously.
I completely agree. Being a KY fan and watching you guys, it is very difficult to guard the constant screens being set for your shooters, who can either pop out, fade, or curl. Having an elite catch and shoot guy makes it even more difficult, and can lead to the big being able to slip to the basket for a dunk if his man hedges on the screen for the shooter. (Igor did this against us a couple times this season when his man hedged to cover Lanier off the screen).

Ok but they’re all being paid to do a job so it does actually make sense. Barnes said it himself when Chaz wasn’t being aggressive enough earlier this season, if you’ll recall

Eh, it isn't a black or white issue. I said when NIL started that just taking the highest bidder is short sighted. Maximizing your worth doesn't always equate to taking the highest offer. When someone like Rodney Garner can prepare you as a defensive lineman, you may take less in the short term and maximize your worth in the long term. People who make good decisions analyze the offer, the comfort, the fit, and the relationships. Relationships still matter. The same can be said in the business world, too.

Chaz took less to come to UT to be coached by Barnes, allow his family to see most games, and to represent his in-state school. That example is not on your side.

Interested in playing PG? Then why'd he visit the school where his former teammate and PG had just committed? Not sure I'm buying that reason.
Just thought I would post this article I read yday and was the reason why I mentioned Rice wanting to play PG. Not sure about how legitimate the source is and it's also the first I've heard it as well. I understand the whole deal about coming to play with Gillespie if that was the case. But anyway, here is where it came from. Sorry I didn't copy the actual article so just click on his name below and then it's obviously the first one about Rice choosing between 3 schools.
