2025/26 Transfer Portal Thread

Why would they draft a QB #1 when they had sooooooo many other holes? Cam Ward will waste his career in TN just like DH.
Upgrades and a new DC still takes time. This ain't CFB '26.
Just because they drafted him number one doesn’t mean they thought they were a QB away. Just means it’s the most important position on the field and they thought he could be a franchise QB

So you think the ‘26 defense is gonna be worse than ‘25???

I don't think the run defense will be worse. Overall it will be average. Like middle of the SEC.

Maybe it’s an unpopular opinion, but I really don’t understand why we didn’t look at Lagway. I think Heupel could do wonders with him. The kid is an athlete, he just had a terrible coach.

Around the same as a George and probably don’t see him as an upgrade over George.

Other staffs are allowed to blatantly flaunt the rules. Lane is at the forefront of doing so. So yes, they have a competitive advantage as the NCAA isn't even attempting to dole out any punishments.
Yet, still isn't a guarantee to secure a playoff spot. Just because UT wants to have legit deals doesn't mean they are squeaky clean. They've definitely dropped bags. Regardless what the perception is.

Human beings aren’t perfect. I will presume that. Everyone has their faults. We all make mistakes.

I guess you can suggest I’m being presumptuous about your feelings when DW was hired, but it’s interesting that is mentioned now. I would say that 99% of UT fans were excited for a new direction with an AD that was resoundingly successful at his two previous schools. Only now is it suggested that maybe some weren’t quite so fond of him? That’s just talking in the moment.

This current discussion is absolutely a result of recent happenings. Because we lose our last football game AND some fans perceive us as not having a whole lot of money, we’re here. The criticism of DW came from his responses on twitter about NIL and the Entertainment District (which has no real bearing on NIL).

Sure, there can be middle ground- to what point? Your post was pretty critical though. He’s made mistakes, but looking at the big picture, he’s been excellent and figured things out. I also don’t get the extreme criticism over fees and costs. It’s simple supply and demand. DW also didn’t totally create this uber expensive environment. It’s the result of the state of college athletics, ESPECIALLY when your coaches are successful (and hitting milestones that the school hasn’t seen in a while or never seen).

I’m just a glass half full kind of guy. I get tired of the constant criticisms on this board. We all went through 15 years of below average athletics, and I just don’t get how people forget that. When people complain (not you) about 12-5 in basketball, just wait until the next coach can’t make the tournament. It’s inevitable. People complain about “year 5” in football like there is an infinite trajectory. There are only 13 games- Heupel went 11-2 in year 2. This environment isn’t conducive to 10+ wins every year. I try to see big picture- that’s just me.
It's being mentioned now because he's made a series of what I consider foolish decisions childishly interacting with upset fans on social media, and laying out preemptive excuses thru the media. He doesn't need to do those things. What good comes of it? So, yeah, it's talking in the moment because those things are relative at the moment.

You keep mentioning football, but for me it has nothing to do with us losing our last football game(s). I'd feel the exact same way about those things if we were gearing up for the title game Monday night. It feels like you're conflating those two issues or at least projecting the idea on my opinion that the two are related. They aren't. I realize your opinion on their relation may generally cover a multitude of people particpating in this overall discussion, but it's misguided when directed as a response to my post.

Re: Mensah and some others, like the QB at Washington. When it was first announced Demond Williams was entering the portal it was said there is a loophole where these athletes can just unenroll at their current school and then enroll at their new one. It’s what the kid at Miami did at Wisconsin. Unless I misunderstood, he signed his rev share agreement at Wisconsin and then entered the portal, unenrolled at Wisconsin and enrolled at Miami. The NCAA did nothing about it and he’s been playing all season for the Canes. Could Mensah not do the same?

I mean it depends what you want. Do want winning football or do you want do be 6-6 and clean? And who is calling it out? I’d like to see the list. I’m guessing whoever is whining about their players leaving. Okay… what do you do? Take it to court and it be settled years down the road where, at the point, nobody will care.

And I don’t wear panties.
Commando...how risque 😳

So not great but much improved over last year

If we hit 2-3 more contributors I think we can be top 30-40 in the country. Maybe better

I think our defensive coaching has been atrocious.
I agree. Almost felt like the whole defense quit at times. They didn’t even believe in themselves and you could see it. How we won that Arkansas game I’ll never understand. Or Miss State.

I think the main reason the offense felt frustrating at times last year was because every game in certain stretches it felt like we had to score every time or we would lose. So every mistake became a critical mistake. And we made a bunch of those. But they shouldn’t have all been so critical.

The defense never gave us reasons to believe in them. They were soft on the run (which hadn’t really happened under Banks since 2021), predictable, bad at tackling, and strategically crushed by the opposing OC every week. The season felt like Banks never left the playoff game at Ohio State. It just continued on.

Even if we don’t get anybody else in the portal, that should not be the case next year. Amari Campbell and Qua Moss are gonna get us some stops. Knowles is going to bring back pride on that side of the ball.

So it appears we still have a few spots to fill and no real traction with any prospects. Are we just planning to fill the positions with walk ons or do we enough on roster already. I know players dont have to sign by tonight but wouldnt they have to pretty soon with classes starting?
Brother we have more than a few empty spots, we only have 71 players rn. That is factoring in transfers in/out, graduation and hs. We can go up to 102 with rhe roster sanctions

For reference, we had 76 players on the ‘25 squad

I believe we will see a few public commits/signings this weekend and Monday.

Guys who are fringe staters and/or rotational pieces to compete with current fringe starters but signed after the portal is closed so that our guys don’t leave. (RB, IOL, DL, DBs).

I’m not saying it will be a 5star closing of signees. I’m just saying, I expect a list of names to sign once it no longer impacts current roster.

But maybe I’m wrong.
