2025/26 Transfer Portal Thread

It was late last week when Basilio was talking about the staff’s aggressiveness. He said that we don’t tamper like other schools are doing because we’re still on probation. Why worry about getting into trouble when the NCAA can’t enforce their own rules? At this point we need to walk a QB into the portal and lock them up quickly.

My take on the QB situation from just reading tea leaves:

The staff seems very confident in GMac or Faizon next year, right or wrong. I think their plan was to swing big for a portal guy (Ty or Leavitt) and if not them, go get a guy to just compete for the job with the other 2.

One thing I don’t really worry about with this offense is QB (just my opinion). Interested to see how the next couple of days shake out

Doubt it.

Sanders, Perry, and Pendleton will all improve. And Moe will be back. Heard was much better than the year before, but that’s largely because he was terrible the year before. There’s a reason he didn’t go pro: He would have been retiring from football. His horrible footwork caused a scoop and score in the bowl game. He was pretty good, but certainly not great…which is why he’s now at Kentucky and not a real football program.

The OLine will be better.
I would also bet a kings ransom that Kentucky didn't pay him anywhere in the vicinity of $3 million. Handlers and agents can inflate the numbers to try and inflate the market and cause teams to panic and up their offer. Tennessee supposedly offered Ty Simpson $4 million and than offered Leavitt $7 million. Ty is the better quarterback with a much higher NFL value at the moment and we are supposed to believe they were willing to pay Leavitt that much more than Ty? I call BS. There are no rules and nobody has to actually show the contract so handlers and agents just make up stuff and tweet it. Then all of the crazies start running with it like it's fact. Kids are getting ridiculous money to play college football but take the $$ amount with a grade of slaw.

Sounds nice on paper, but “walking” anyone into the portal, particularly QBs, at this point is no sure thing. If the player has an agent, even with a “do not contact” tag, it’s still going to be a crap shoot. In other words, if you’re not going to be aggressive through to the finish line, there’s no loyalty built from being the first to contact.

I know JH has some great things with QBs, so I am not knocking him there. We have seen 2 QBs while he has been here that have thrown the ball extremely well and run the offense very efficiently and then we've seen 2 that were limited in running the offense. So it's not always a guarantee that the next guy is just gonna come right in and throw 3000+ and light it up. We've proven we can make it to the playoffs without that, but we had a top of the conference defense and NFL running back on roster that year too. I still think we need to try and figure out bringing a starter in for next year with defense being brand new. JMO.

I hope they are. I just don't think they will be. We shall see.
I tend to think the O line will be improved as well with several returning starters. Plus another year of strength for Sanders is a big deal at his age. He clearly has the agility and after a year of growth in S & C he should have the strength as well.

I didnt know Stevie Wonder watched college football. That's the only person I know that could have watched what little we saw of Merk and thought "hey, we need more of that"
I joked about Merk coming back in this thread also, but in no world was I serious. I haven't ventured to other forums though.

It's because he is a guard playing LT

I know it’s all about the Benjamin’s nowadays, but kinda surprising a qb hasn’t looked at our situation and decided a bump in nfl draft stock is worth any perceived difference in NIL.

Returning the OL, RB, 2 proven playmakers at WR, and a pass catching TE. Not to mention Huepel’s success at elevating QB play and putting guys in the league. All that to say, I think our offense will be good either way. We’ve always had at least average qb play under huepel, and even the Milton/Nico years it was much the lack of playmakers as it was the qb. That’s not the case this season.

I am surprised a QB from Duke or NC State would not go into portal. Not on cfp teams they are on.

Heupel has no choice (if we don't land portal QB that is our starter) but for Gmac to play at the same level of Nico or better in his first official starting year if he going all in with Gmac. If he is shaky the first half of the season, I think Heupel is in for a LONG second half.

I firmly believe that Heupel is coaching the 12th game of the 2027 season, but if we don't land a starter from the Portal AND Joey's case doesn't win (assuming Joey wants to play again), Heupel will have had an awful, no good, rotten 2025 coaching management performance. Both on and off the field.

Somewhat under the radar QB's:

Derek Robertson (Monmouth)
Cole Payton (ND State)
Taron Dickens (W Carolina)
Ralph Rucker (Bucknell)
Victor Gabalis (Tarleton State)

Is Cole Payton still available? He actually isn’t that bad.

2,719 passing yards
72%
16 TD / 4 INTs

777 rushing yards
13 TDs

He also led the FCS in passing efficiency.

Go get this guy @99vawl

We're down to fantasizing about QBs entering the portal sometime in the next 3 days. It's clear we had no real QB strategy, which both baffles and alarms me. If it happens, great, but if that's what we're banking on, that's a risky strategy.
The QB strategy is to compete. Neither of the young fellows are annointed. Best not to foster a culture of entitlement in today's environment.

What kills me is we have a great offense and the defense sucks... then a great defense and offense is a problem ... if he could figure out both we would be playing for a ship
Was not aware offense was a problem. Maybe just sit back and let it unfold and don't be one of those sky is falling posters that said Heupel couldn't close a few weeks ago before putting together one of the top quality classes in the nation

It is, what it is.. the sky isn't always falling like some fans seem to think...
