Sports SourceI really enjoy watching the sports source and their review of each position group. And on paper, OL is weaker this year without Heard. Receivers may be weaker without Brazzel. Running game is weaker than going in to last year. And then, yes, unproven QB is a concern. But yes, with better strength and conditioning and another year for some players, could work out. If it does, would this be the first year under Heupel when we are clicking on both sides of the ball?
I'm not convinced there will be a deficiency in the middle. Isaiah Campbell, Ethan Utley, and Charles House are very talented young players who will make big 2nd year jumps with Garner and Owings. Nathan Robinson and Hobbs are both very talented guys who Garner has always loved, but who have been held back by injury. A healthy offseason for both will result in both taking a big step. Again, Owings should be instrumental in both developing them and keeping them healthy. I think they'll add some good weight to Robinson and maybe a few lbs to Hobbs. And of course, the addition of Gilliam is big. The Penn State people seemed to think he was on track to develop into a stud.I have always said the strength of the defense is Edge and the backfield with how the college game is played… we will make up for the deficiency in the middle with this scheme so I feel pretty great about the D going into next season… and us loading up on TE’s are interesting to watch too.
His laziness as a technician cost us the Music City bowl.Heard is not an irreplaceable player. He was good, never great. Very powerful blocker in certain situations but not really a technician. Which is why he didn’t get a good draft grade and is playing at Kentucky. We can do better.
Sanders showed more natural elite tackle traits as a true freshman than Heard ever did imo. He wasn’t perfect but he’s very skilled and I’m betting will be much better after an offseason with Owings and the boys.
Edwards had over 120 yards against us in 1997. Lewis Freshman year. Sanks was a freshman in 1998 and wasn’t even on UGAs roster in 97. I was in Athens when Sanks was kicked out of school in 2001. The same year that Lewis won a SB ring. They weren’t in the same class. Sanks was at military school and enrolled a year behind Lewis even though he’s technically older.Edwards ran all over us in 1995. Sanks was in Lewis' recruiting class, so he was a freshman in 1997.
Looked it up. Looks like Sanks would have been a freshman in 1997 (since he was in Jamal's class), but had to attend Fork Union for a year. So you're right...1998 was his freshman year. Jasper Sanks - Wikipedia. But they were originally in the same recruiting class, Sanks just ended up having to do a post grad year, pushing him to the next class. I get that. But there are enough teams and with rosters at 105 now, those guys will find a landing spot.Roster management would be a nightmare. Coaches can’t hold spots for guys in case they don’t get drafted. If the draft was in January it’s not a big deal but with the draft in April most teams have wrapped up spring practice and need to know who is going to be on the team. The MLB draft takes place right after the end of the college baseball season while the MLB is still going on.
Yes. I know all of this as I was at the 95 and 97 games. I was also at the 2001 game that Sanks PLAYED IN while Lewis was in his 2nd year in the league.Looked it up. Edwards rushed for 156 in Knoxville in 1995 before getting hurt. If he hadn't, they might've beat us. We couldn't stop him. University of Tennessee Athletics
He had another good game in 1997 against us, but thanks to Jamal, that game was never really in doubt. That was my sophomore year at UT. University of Tennessee Athletics
Then you know it was Sanks who Georgia prioritized over Jamal while they were in the same class (before Sanks had to go to Fork Union), and not Edwards, as you said, since Edwards was 2 classes older than Jamal. That was the point.Yes. I know all of this as I was at the 95 and 97 games. I was also at the 2001 game that Sanks PLAYED IN while Lewis was in his 2nd year in the league.
Oh the Fork Union and Hargrave days...Looked it up. Looks like Sanks would have been a freshman in 1997 (since he was in Jamal's class), but had to attend Fork Union for a year. I think they are pretty high on HarrisonIMO Thomas was a direct replacement for the titty baby from Texas. Only he’s bigger and has more experience. I think they like Martinez because he’s also got plenty of experience and is a bit more of a split-out TE so has a different skill set. Now they’ll have 3 guys with tons of experience plus Brame who’s obviously got all the talent in the world. And this way they won’t have to rely on Harrison unless really take a leap.
Edwards was FOUR classes ahead of Lewis. Actually technically 5 as he was a RS senior in 97. He played in the rookie game at the Pro Bowl with Peyton and destroyed his knee. The post that I corrected said that Sanks was “on the other side “ at the 1997 game. That was absolutely not the case. You’re taking on water in a hurry and you need to stop and drink some decaf. You came in and corrected me without knowing what you were talking about. You still don’t know what you’re talking about…(for example see the part about the difference in age between Lewis and Edwards) and you’re trying to make up for it by throwing a bunch of information out that I already know. Take your L and move on. You’ll get em another time. Then you know it was Sanks who Georgia prioritized over Jamal while they were in the same class (before Sanks had to go to Fork Union), and not Edwards, as you said, since Edwards was 2 classes older than Jamal. By this logic. Every team in the country gor weaker at multiple positions this offseason.I really enjoy watching the sports source and their review of each position group. I’m not tearing down Heard either. But if he was that good and critical to what we do we probably would have paid him what he wants to keep him.No one is irreplaceable. Players, coaches, ADs, college deans... No one is irreplaceable.
Not going to tear down Heard to build up Sanders. Heard played well for us this season. I hope he sucks when we play KY.
Sanders did okay for a freshman, but there were definitely growing pains. He needs to be better. Especially playing LT. Hopefully he adjusts quickly and keeps the QB clean.
Hopefully this OL gels quickly and plays their asses off this season. We need them to.
This is in some ways what I'm saying. There are questions on the OL. For me, the RB room is not as strong but hey, we still have our leading rusher. This 'could' lead to some up and down offense next year with an untested QB. With a new QB, you need to lean on running backs and a stiff OL. In years past, we're either strong on Offense or Defense, not both. Will this be the year that both side click? On the Defense, I have fewer concerns though yes, could we find one more solid guy for the DL? We have a solid coaching staff on that side and strength and conditioning should make a big difference. Plus, most of our big portal gets come on that side.I’m not tearing down Heard either. But if he was that good and critical to what we do we probably would have paid him what he wants to keep him.
