2024 Transfer Portal Thread

Three underrated guard options out there are:

The guard from Yale - August Mahoney at 6'4" is a knock down 3 point shooter. Another 4 year guy who wouldn't be the Lanier get, but his role could be vital as a much needed shot maker off the bench from time to time. 46% 3 pt shooter and have him in a Steve kerr kind of role

AJ Hoggard from Michigan State - same 6'3" size as Vescovi and gives Zeigler extra help as a ballhandler / facilitator - could be an option. Taking maybe 6-8 point guard minutes while sharing the SG mins with Gainey + Mashack, yet Mashack getting most of his mins at the 3 imo... Barnes & Izzo are close and Barnes is deff aware of Hoggard from the pre season games.so I could see it as a maybe.

Garwey Dual from Providence was an overall 34th ranked recruit last year and played for former Vol Coach, English. I don't see us going for a guy with that many years left at that position but his timeline fits the same timeline from departures Dillione + Jefferson...I don't see it just bc we have Bishop Boswell incoming and have plans in the 2025 class, plus we deff seem to be seeking a 1 & done senior at guard, but there may be a English-Barnes connection there and something to think about... he's a defender averaging a steal as a freshman in 18 mins...

Those are three names who are out there that I haven't seen on here... Of course Lanier or Christie would be great and the publicity from the big name like Bronny would be cool...

By no means is this speculating, just sharing a few other guard options out there "if" worse come to worse

Just watched some film of Christie and he looks pretty darn good. Good frame and would benefit greatly from some time in the strength program. I'd rather take someone like him rather than blow up the locker room by overpaying for Lanier. I'm going to trust the staff to make the right decision in that regard.
If Christie returns for his sophomore year, at the time that he will be returning and the lack of portal options, I'd expect his talent to command a similar number to Lanier.

It isn't my money, but in a vacuum I'd be much more comfortable paying Christie $1.5 mil than I would be Lanier.

The only person on this list that I’d remotely accept is Mahoney and that’s if we don’t have any other options.

Don’t know anything about Dual. Hoggard is the definition of mid.

I’d cry if we got to this point lol

Some of these comments are ridiculous and I don’t understand why some attack or ridicule others with diff enter opinions. If you disagree, state your point in a polite manner and move on.

Nobody knows what will happen and the so called “insiders” pretend to have info by posting comments that can be found on other boards, by Brent Hubbs, and so on.

With that said, I’m not going to be consumed on one player and trust Barnes to coach up the current roster.

Go Vols! Everyone have a good night and enjoy the ⚾️ Vols!

So show me what guys we're pursuing along with Lanier?
The kind of recruiting that would lead to offers, visits, or even news of alternative targets wouldn’t occur until Lanier is actually off the board. If you don’t see UT pursuing other wings it probably means we’re in a good position

Feel like I remember you saying that, yes. I’d have to go back to look. Either way, there is no hard feelings. You don’t need to stop posting. We’re all just here to have a discussion.

EDIT: I went back to look just to make sure I was being fair, and you didn’t say “if you know what I know” you said “You would have to be an insider to understand.” So, not the same thing, my sincere apologies, but I think similar intent.
Intent and YOUR perception are two very different things.

It’s usually a last resort for me but had to use it on a couple people in a different thread back in March when I got hammered for saying I feared Aidoo could transfer, which he did. So the responses I got are funny now. All those “he’s not going anywhere” posts (and a few other colorful retorts) by people that haven’t realized how college sports is now.
I just ignore obvious trolls

SF was fine, but BTO definitely ribbed people pretty hard about being “hysterical” and was basically like “if you knew what I knew, you wouldn’t worry.” Any time money is involved, no one should ever feel good until the dotted line is signed.
Even when the dotted line is signed there always seems to be a loophole. Never trust anything.

To be fair, at this point in the portal if we do miss on him we could probably scramble and get an equally good player that’s left on the board.

Most teams this late have their rosters full (other than Arkansas) but most kids won’t go there to sit behind Davis.

I do think we could pivot pretty quickly to someone else if need be. It bothers me that we don’t have any other guys lined up, but I’m starting to not worry if that makes sense
Maybe. I still remember all of our eggs being in the Yuri Collins basket and how that turned out.

I wondered why I was missing 10 pages ...then I realized I had 100 accounts on ignore ...so that means I haven't missed anything.

Freaking out == BVS

Chaz is like Santa ... He is coming to town. I suspect that I am in the minority here, but I'm loading cannons because a big boom is drawing near.

So where are the reports of another 2 guard that we're in on? Every outlet I've read has indicated that it's Lanier or bust. If I'm wrong...usually am...I look forward to the other names we're presently in on.
Why in the world would a staff FEATURE a name of potential alternative during a protracted attempt to sign a more demonstrated probability to be a difference maker? It is not like they have not shown an ability to pivot LATE and bring in the successful ZZ’s, Awaka’s, and even one of the latest of all time Santi. Then there has been a RANGE of other less productive guys, but for sure shows the mechanisms and lists are in place if the risk/reward makes sense they pull the trigger. The appearance of a late pivot to a priority MIGHT be better than a long public hold pattern. No historical basis to assume they are sitting around and not working on contingencies for our roster.

Don’t think he effects Lanier much at all, but do start to wonder how many mouths they have to feed.

PG: Lamont Butler/Kerr Krisa
SG: Otega Oweh/Colin Chandler/Travis Perry
SF: Koby Brea/Trent Noah
PF: Andrew Carr/Ansley Almonor
C: Amari Williams/Brandon Garrison

The 3 freshman make for obvious end of bench choices, but look at the remaining 8…

PG: Lamont Butler 27.5/Kerr Krisa 33.4
SG: Otega Oweh 24.9
SF: Koby Brea 29.1
PF: Andrew Carr 32.5/Ansley Almonor 32.0
C: Amari Williams 22.9/Brandon Garrison 22.7

That’s 225 minutes and there’s only 200 available, Lanier would add another 33mpg to that. That’s asking some folks to really accept a smaller role, now I have no doubts UK is good with doing that, I just question how those others may feel about adding Lanier or how Lanier may feel about the uncertainty.

Agreed. I don't see how Chaz Lanier gets a ton of minutes (20+ mins/game) at the 1, 2 or even 3 slot at Kentucky.
Best case, he probably gets to play 20 mins/game, if that... unless he can translate his scoring ability into the SEC pretty easily.

That must also be a factor into his decision as well, especially if he's thinking about the NBA draft for next year.

Taking my post now, huh 👀

He posted similar numbers and was a year younger, went to the NBA combine and was told he wouldn’t be drafted. Comes to UT and like I said posts similar numbers, goes to the combine and is told he’s a likely Top 10 pick. Why?

I don't even see where he was invited to the 2023 combine

This is a kid I'd love to bring in regardless of whether Lanier comes or not. When was the last time we had a flat-out knockdown shooter to come off the bench? This was supposed to be Gainey's role, but last season it didn't quite work out.
