2024 Transfer Portal Thread

I can’t see Barnes coaching much longer if NIL continues to irritate him nor do I blame him.

This is why Jay Wright refuses to get back into coaching.

I’m all for players trying to max their potential but what has Lanier done that’s warranted him almost 2 million when he hasn’t proved to be an SEC level type player yet?

Per Trilly, “Source said (UK offered) 1.7 million. Grain of salt, but feels like the right ballpark.” Also says he’s told Barnes is pissed about the way this has played out and turned into a NIL thing over the last week or so.
I understand Barnes getting upset but Barnes knows the era of relationships are trumped by how many zeros are on that NIL offer.

Probably upset considering Lanier probably personally told him he was coming to Tennessee only to force his hand after UK threw dollar signs in his face.

This is what teams who don't pay top NIL say to justify and make excuses to feel better about chances.

The argument that a kid can't get PAID top nil and make it to the LEAGUE at Kentucky is absurd (and I hate Kentucky with the best of them)

Who said that?

We’re coming off of an Elite Eight & SEC Regular Season title with a projected lottery pick in this year’s draft.

Only BVS fans & Kentucky fans think going there to play for a new HC unproven in the SEC, completely having to overhaul his entire roster for an assumed top paying NIL deal is a better situation.

If Lanier and his family are close to Barnes as the reports say they are, I can’t see how they would even let it get to this point.

All this talk of Lanier wanting to be developed for the NBA was nothing but smoke & mirrors if he ends up at Kentucky considering Pope has no proof of doing that.

Fantastic journalism by KSR here
Yes. And hardly the first time. There has been a major twitterX campaign by the KY-affiliated and "third parties" sucking up to KY and stoking drama in this recruitment. Every day another "news" flash. Everyone is "close to" people.

KY appears to really want this to be strictly a matter of them desperately outspending us or forcing us to overpay. It reminds somewhat of Miami's behavior in football. Some of the other ring leaders seem to be eating up the easy publicity.

Yeah. I wasn’t even trying to call out BTO or SF specifically for doing that, or for potentially being wrong. But the example that I remembered most specifically was you and BTO. I appreciate the info and recognize that it’s good info, but there needs to be recognition that what is isn’t always what will be
I said this multiple times, prior to SF even iirc

I literally said exactly that multiple times lol

Yeah, but let’s be honest you also laughed at people having any concerns at all about the recruitment and threw the “but if a bag drops” as a CYA. All I’m saying is maybe you shouldn’t have told people to not be hysterical or should have just refrained from acting like it was a done deal.

How exactly could they prevent it from getting to this point? Even players on teams are still being contacted constantly.

He’s in the open market, short of blocking Kentucky representatives there’s not much they can do to prevent receiving offers.

I’d also caution & continue to point out that it’s all just smoke. Unless you’re sitting beside Lanier and reading the offers how can we validate the reports are accurate?

What do we really care the kid is “worth” in NIL? If he helps us win, fits the team and we have the $ available then pay it. Why get upset over $1.7m or any number for that matter?

What matters is that Barnes and Co feel he can help us win at the highest level. So get him if possible. If not, oh well. Why get so bent over NIL numbers that may or may not be accurate? Let’s just capitalize on Barnes last years and win.

Would be pretty bad to lose Lanier at this stage. Greatly lowers the ceiling of next year's team unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat. Him going through this lengthy process never made sense if he was truly set on Tennessee even if he wanted to test the NBA Draft waters.

I mean, look at it from his side too. If you have a coach & team that basically say “we have a spot if you want it” then what would you have to lose from getting the NBA evaluation & feedback?

I think the unexpected change here was that Kentucky would be in a situation like they are and be this desperate to add a high rated portal addition.

How so?

It’s pretty clear his intentions are wanting to get to the NBA.

Him testing the waters isn’t uncommon considering he knows what he needs to work on to get a better rating in next years draft.

That’s the whole solely pitch Barnes is offering.

If he was a lock like people were saying it was, he still could've committed immediately and still went through the NBA process. Not doing that created alot of uncertainty. BTO and SF were trying to make it seem like it was calculated by Chaz & Tennessee to make it seem like there was nothing fishy going on. In reality, it appears Chaz knew he held all the cards and has now leveraged Tennessee & Kentucky.

You can still commit to a school and go through the process. Plenty of guys have done it. None of that was stopping him from committing to Tennessee as a fall-back option.

We assuming again?
