But the North certainly wasn’t fighting to free them.

I've voted both ways in the past, selecting the people I consider the lesser of two evils. I call the shots as I see them, no matter what Demos or Repubs think, or even care what they think. And slavery would have ended anyways without having to kill hundreds of thousands of Americans. The invention of modern farm machinery would have put an end to that. Only a small fraction of southerners even owned slaves.
