2022 Recruits

You could probably say it was because the former Assistants were not getting around like they needed to because of covid or just not doing what they needed to do. I expect Williams will offer and try to recruit everyone left on the board and give it her best shot in getting a couple to Tennessee.

Cool i hear you.

Never saw her play but i trust you. I also see we Just offered 6-0 PG Talaysia Cooper i had a chance to see her play in SC . She can ball with the best of them. And what i don`t get is why all the late offers to the elite players ? I don`t and i`m pretty sure no one on this board knows why so many late offers. The old staff could have made offers to some of the players that we are offering now.

Could it be that is why they are the old staff? At least one reason, maybe.

Every other coaching staff had to deal with Covid too and they were able to offer players.

Partially because the trail of wasted careers and unfulfilled potential of highly recruited players finally caught up with us. It's amazing to me that the program kept reeling them in right up through Jordan Horston with so many cautionary tales already out there.

That's why player development, most especially that of Horston, is so crucial in the upcoming season.

The same phenomenon will happen when the "Evil Genius II" walks away from the connies...if it drops dramatically like our program did under Holly,,,the elite players will want to be the panacea and will continue to flock there,,,until the program runs completely to insignificance.

We jetisoned CHW just in time. This is why I back Coach K ,, fully. (I know it doesn't seem that I do BC I am so tough on her. But I am tough on her, not as a fan, but as a coach)...I do and WILL back Coach K FULLY until/unless I am fully proven wrong. And I will not make that call until year 5.

Does it seem that TN offers late in recruitment.? I know I've seen only a few 23' offered and only 1 24' offered up to this point. Should be not be jumping on these top kids earlier than late sophomore or junior year?? Will that turn kids away from TN possible making them feel TN is uninterested and not building strong relationships

For top kids like top 10-15, yes we should. But not for borderline kids. If you decide later that you don’t really like them that much, you simply slow or stop recruiting and kids move on.

It will be interesting to see if this changes with Coaches S and J on board.
I wonder about the ethics of recruiting. If you offer 12 kids and number 12 commits before number 1 commits for one spot do you pull the offer from number 12 who committed first or tell number 1 they are too late.
Recruiting sounds like a hell of a way to make a living!

I think they wait too long. Look at all the big schools except Uconn they offer early. We not like we used to be where you can wait then show up late at party. We use to be able do that.
uconn makes offers early to top 5 prospects,,,that is usually a good bet

Interesting theory of the case that elites continued to come here bc they wanted to be "the One" that saved the program. As good as any reason to explain why elite recruits ignored all available evidence and thought they'd develop their talent under the previous staff.

Disagree. It was at least a season too late. See above, too many careers got wasted.

,
Doesn't it? And now, with the transfer rule and portal, recruiting never ends, AND you also have to re-recruit your own current players. For coaches who already don't love recruiting, things just got way worse. These recruiting specialists, like our new coach, must be a special species.

I don't think you tell #1 they are too late. You probably have a conversation with someone else on the roster or an incoming recruit about what their future with the team will be. Given the transfer #'s, I'm sure that most of the top players that can get minutes elsewhere will get the message and move on.

That's why I find situations like UConn and MSST this coming year so interesting. MSST has a glut of 5'7-5'10 guards, and UConn has 3 incoming McD AA freshmen wings, including two that are pretty much consensus top 5 players. I'd be surprised if both teams keep their rosters intact for the 22-23 season.

He's right, though. Diamond, Evina and I think Rennia all said just that when they signed under Holly. I think that's about the perfect description for how Tennessee started to become less appealing to top prospects.

that is why very few are VERY good at it...you have to be able to make that connection early, sustain it (without offering and without alienating or discouraging your target),,,while all the time courting other recruits

Or, as I told a good friend recently
"Great coaches don't choose the great players,,,,,Great players choose the great coaches"

That said, if you prove yourself to be a great coach and maintain that stature,,,,or, to paraphrase Ray Kinsella, played by Kevin Costner, in the film Field of Dreams

"If you build it, they will come"

Tennessee did try get on jaloni quick. Unless something changes i think we miss out on her. I'd hate to recruit, you go after top kids and then wait and see if another kid develops then that kid becomes really good but feels snubbed. Tuff landscape for sure. Pat built the dynasty. She took risk on fact she could develop some local players. She didn't always get roster of top 5. Had mixtures of different talents. She develop them all into great players and won. Then she was able to get about any she wanted however still brought in players that she made great by developing them.
