2022 Army game bought out (merged)

I'm amazed that a lot of people still don't know the difference between a cut block and a chop block. A chop block is a penalty, both are dangerous for D Linemen. With that being said, we shouldn't be playing Army. It's a high risk/low reward game that we could very easily lose.

Wow. Some of you guys actually getting triggered over some of us fans who think we should honor our commitment and play Army.

And from the posts being made its more than obvious there are fans scared to play them. What are you all going to do if Akron comes in and beats us or plays us close?
We may lose but we will still have our knees and play a scheme that is not stuck in the 1940s. Sheesh use you brain ( if you can). Also “ triggered “ is not being used anymore grandpa.

It has nothing to do with being scared of Army for me, but I have to echo the sentiment that playing option teams sucks for several reasons.

(1) The games are incredibly boring. That Georgia Tech game was a horrid slog. Now, it got exciting at the end, but watching option football sucks for the most part. It's fun every now and then to watch two service academies play one another for the nostalgia factor of "old school" football, but on the whole, I would much rather just watch modern offense.

(2) It's a waste of valuable practice time to prepare for something you will never see again. Does that impact your season on the whole? Probably not, but why even take the time to reorient your team into playing fundamentals that aren't useful to the rest of your schedule?

(3) The cut blocks and chop blocks are a legitimate risk of injury to your team. It is so easy for a high/low block to end a season for your defensive linemen. I know that chop blocks are illegal, but in this scheme they happen. Yes, I know that anyone can get injured on any play, but why take the unnecessary risk of volunteering for an entire game full of plays that have the propensity to get your roster dinged up, especially when the team is as thin as ours presently?

I hate that Army won't get the chance to play in Neyland, but they will find another game and get a nice payday regardless. Honestly, and this won't be a popular opinion, but with the way college football is evolving I legitimately wonder how long the service academies will be able to continue on. The simple fact is that no one wants to play them, because of the reasons I have outlined above. There is very little to no benefit for Power 5 teams to play service schools at this point.

then go be an army fan , are you really this thick to not be able to figure out this game has no redeeming qualities whatsoever
And what redeeming qualities does playing Akron offer? Just admit it. You think Akron is going to be an easy win. We shouldn't be playing teams just because we think they will be an easy win.

You don't see Notre Dame backing out of their games with Navy. We shouldn't back out of one with Army. Simple as that.

Are you really this dense ? ND and Army play every single year. They prepare for it and are accustomed to that play. ND also usually plays a make shift schedule. If they play an all Conference schedule that game may fade. ND vs Army draws viewers because it a long standing rivalry which we do not have with them. I would rather play ND yearly because it has a bigger face between the two

Just paid Army $500,000 to cancel the contract and not play next year and replaced them with Akron. Now Army is without a game next year. Any details on any other reason we would have dropped this game?

$100,000

Given the landscape of the SEC and college football as a whole, we ABSOLUTELY should be scheduling easy wins. With the future expansion of the playoff system, if you are an SEC team that aspires to make the playoffs then there is no benefit to playing lower level teams that could jump up and beat you.

I don't think Army would beat Tennessee, regardless, but the premise of your point is flawed.

Danny White knows his career is tied to Josh Heupel. They are both figuring out that they are in over their heads.

You mean Notre Dame vs Navy. The fact is Army and Navy were easy wins for teams in the past. Now they are not.

Army and Navy are usually two of the least penalized teams in college football. They are very disciplined and do not make many mistakes. That's one reason why they have improved the past decade.

Just admit it. You don't want Tennessee to play Army anytime soon because there is the chance they might get beat. That's all you got to say.

So we should be scheduling easy non conference wins and should only play teams who run basically the same offensive scheme? Got it.

Sounds rather boring to me.

Our AD is very good. He promised to give every resource available for the coaches and students to be successful. He saw the problem with the scheduling. Who we play before and after Army, the potential for injuries, and the possible effect it would have on other games throughout the season are all reasons the change was made.

With all due respect, this game never should have been scheduled. As I read your comments you don't really contest the concerns raised about increased player danger, wasted prep time for an option offense that you'll not see again for years, etc.. Your concerns all seem to relate to the fact that it's a service academy we are changing out. And, no, I don't think Akron is a trade up. It's just a game and it will have no appeal to me.

Historically, service academies were able to compete with most college programs, but not so much anymore. The toughness that service academies present on defense is not a problem to me. But I think Tennessee should never have scheduled any team running a retro, option- type, offense. The academies stick to those types of schemes because they simply can no longer compete athletically (most years) with modern Division 1 programs. Other than the nostalgia for old timers (like me) of playing service academies, with all the attendant grand college traditions that go with it, playing service academy games today is a high risk/low reward game burdened with, largely, wasted preparation. Academy games are of little actual benefit for UT or any other major D1 program in today's game. The academies' admirable admission criteria are great for the armed forces, but not for trying to maintain a legit D1 football program.

Lol im not afraid of losing. I would be a Bama bandwagoneer if so. Besides I been around a while. I have seen my share of winning and losing. I am tited of losing, but I am not afraid of it. And it is almost certainty that Army would beat us next year. We are a couple years away from being truly competitive with most teams that matter. What I do not want, is to have our guys playing against a system that could cost them growth as a whole. In other words I would rather not put our kids in jeopardy to play a game we have nothing to gain from. I woukd rather play an Oklahoma, Texas, S.Cal before playing a service school with that type offense

You mean pay to come take ass whoopin games? Admit it easy W’s that help get us into meaningless Bowl games make you happy?
Obviously you totally missed the point by your severe over reaction. These smaller schools agree to play these games usually 2 a year, because the money from these games usually funds their entire athletic budgets for all sports for the entire year. Yes they are easy wins for most division 1 schools but it is important to them as well because it allows their 2nd and 3rd stringers to have extended valuable live game reps that they need for their development. So yes I would much rather play a school that needs the money vs an institution that has theirs fully funded by the government.

It doesn't matter who scheduled it. We should honor the commitment to play a service academy. Plus, how often are these guys who are going to serve our country in the future going to have the opportunity to also play in Neyland Stadium. The administration just took the chance to play in one of the best stadiums in college football away from them. We should be ashamed.
Screw them. Who cares what they want

Probably.

We can’t beat a Pitt team that managed to lose to Western Michigan. Not the University of Michigan, but Western Michigan. This Tennessee team, just like the ones before it, excels only at finding ways to lose the games that matter the most. Beating up on Tenn Tech and Bowling Green shouldn’t make anyone feel confident.

Beating Pitt matters the most?

I would trade a Pitt win over any SEC win.

These warm up games are designed to help get some folks meaningful reps. When the offense they run doesn’t assist in the development of our players, drop them. The cut block mess counts too.

Have any idea how stupid it was to play a chip blocking tough as nails team that is running a offensive scheme that we we won’t see any other team we play EVER ? What positive can you think of to play this game?
A W vs a good team instead of a W vs a team that nationally is perceived as terrible.
