My uncle was a law professor at Rutgers and came down for the game with us. Still talks about it 42 yrs later. SMHI had hired a Rutgers grad shortly before that game and of course made a smart azz comment about his Scarlet Knights. I’ve eaten a lot of crow in my life but that was probably the nastiest tasting one of all.
Yes, I am being circular, but of all the wretched losses by Tennessee teams, the argument is strong that this is the nadir of Vols football in our lifetimes. NTSU arrived at Neyland without sixteen first & second string players, including their kicker. The Volunteers effort on the gridiron was embarrassing. Errors included yielding a touchdown on a kickoff, the infamous hand off to an unchecked defender, and the throw out of bounds to stop the clock with no time left. Rutgers, Wyoming, GSU - all have a degree of embarrassment, but none represent the poor attitude and level of play of the NTSU loss.North Texas State

I was 11. We tied it up late in the 4th qtr. And I’ll never forget it, they ran the kickoff all the way back for a touchdown. I never heard the fans so quiet walking down the ramp at the end of the game. We were all in shock.Went to the game. It was an easy ticket. We got beat. They had better talent. What an embarrassment. TN has a way of losing big time second rate teams. I was I think about 12 then. Wow!
saw a lotta prep football in knoxville, but never had pleasure of seeing him shred defenses during his HS days17 days......
In 1987, Reggie Cobb had the greatest freshman season in UT history. He helped the Vols to a 10-2-1 record and a Peach Bowl victory. Even though he started the season 3rd string, he finished with six 100 yard games. His 1,197 yards rushing is a Tennessee freshman record and his 1,721 yards was a school record for all purpose yards. Cobb also set a modern record with 17 rushing touchdowns, and 20 total TDs.

In 1966, Richmond Flowers made his debut in a Vol uniform as a wingback. He played in 10 games and helped UT to an 8-3 record. Flowers scored 5 TDs, had 35 receptions for 407 yards, and had 19 carries for 82 yards. He was named to the Sophomore All-American team and helped the Vols to a Gator Bowl win over Syracuse.
