2021 Countdown to Bowling Green

When the greatest receivers in UT history are mentioned, Joey Clinkscales’ name is usually mentioned, but it should be. Quick and sure handed, Clinkscales played along side 5 first round NFL draft picks during his tenure at UT. After redshirting in ‘82 and very little playing time in ‘83, he finally got a chance in ‘84. During his RS Jr year in ‘85, Clinkscales’ 22 receptions for 434 yards and 4 TDs, helped lead the Sugar Vols to a SEC Championship. Clinkscales would finish his career the following season and go on to play in the NFL for the Steelers and Buccaneers.

Bill Rudder was a bruising fullback from 1971-1973, known for his blocking, but was also a great runner. He finished his career with 1,260 yards and 7 touchdowns and was the MVP of the ‘71 Liberty Bowl. During his career, he also attempted 3 passes, completing 1 for a 21 yard touchdown to Chip Howard vs Georgia Tech in 1972. He went on to a successful career in the WFL.

Nice to see Bill remembered. Bill played at Franklin County High School in Winchester. Late 60's and early 70's were FC's heyday. The Rebels sent Rudder, Fulmer, Jimmy Moss, and Bobby Majors to Tennessee. Robert Fraley to Alabama. The 3 O'Neal brothers to Vanderbilt. And a ton of players to Austin Peay, MTSU, and Tennessee Tech.

I believe that was the 85 game. Bruins were down 26-10 and came back to tie it up. UCLA ended up making the Rose Bowl that season and beat Iowa. Thanks for the pic! Go Bruins! Go Vols!

In 1956, the Vols finished the regular season 10-0 and were SEC Champions. Johnny Majors was the star, but hardly the only great player. Buddy Cruz became the first Vol to ever have double digit receptions the year before with 12, and improved in ‘56. Cruz had 20 receptions for 357 yards and two touchdowns, while being named All-SEC, All-South, and All-American.

Oh no. It is the dangerous time of year when I am almost ready to believe again. I feel a strange sense of optimism. I am afraid of the usual return to reality though 😳
Maybe this year will be different (please stop me)

Sounds like us Bruins fans! It's what we all do. GO BRUINS! GO VOLS!

In 1966, Richmond Flowers made his debut in a Vol uniform as a wingback. He played in 10 games and helped UT to an 8-3 record. Flowers scored 5 TDs, had 35 receptions for 407 yards, and had 19 carries for 82 yards. He was named to the Sophomore All-American team and helped the Vols to a Gator Bowl win over Syracuse.

In 1967, Bubba Wyche came off the bench when Warren and Fulton were injured, and led the Vols to a victory over Georgia Tech, a victory over Alabama, and then UCLA, helping UT to an SEC Championship and a claim to the NC. In 1968, the team was his. He became the first QB to defeat Bear Bryant’s Alabama team in back to back seasons and led UT to an 8-1-1 regular season and a Cotton Bowl berth. For his career Wyche threw for 2,018 yards and 18 touchdowns. Wyche went on to a successful CFL and WFL career.

In 1987, Reggie Cobb had the greatest freshman season in UT history. He helped the Vols to a 10-2-1 record and a Peach Bowl victory. Even though he started the season 3rd string, he finished with six 100 yard games. His 1,197 yards rushing is a Tennessee freshman record and his 1,721 yards was a school record for all purpose yards. Cobb also set a modern record with 17 rushing touchdowns, and 20 total TDs.
