I was just about to ask the same. I appreciate his professional approach but... It's not his job to grab the catcher by the arm to tell him where the ball's at, wth?

Its exactly what you want as a catcher. Ump is communicating exactly what he is seeing, which allows the catcher to guide his pitcher exactly where he needs to go. Its just awesome that we can hear that. Love it!

I get that on a pitch, that makes sense. But on a batted ball?

Home plate umps and catchers work together. It’s not normal for him to call that out, but not unusual either. In that case he was letting Rodriguez relax and not potentially step on him or throw his mask, etc

Yeah I see that differently. It's the umpires job to make sure he's not in the way. Not help the catcher by telling him where a batted ball is " so he doesn't get stepped on"

I agree with this part of it. Telling the catcher straight down 3rd is not necessary and not his place. Pitches? Cool. Where the ball goes after that? Not cool.

They clap with him…. But they’re vandy fans so what do you expect. Seriously… if we had someone like that they would get the crap beat out of them…. By the players or definitely CTV if the fans didn’t handle it. I could see coach laying in to him with a flying elbow off the top of the dugout….

Played the game from the age of 7 'til lack of talent put an end to the career (in HS) and can't recall EVER hearing an ump do that.

Catcher misses/ drops the ball. Runner is coming, he can't locate the ball.
This umpire says it's right here, right here. Catcher picks it up, tags out the runner game over?
