2020 Top Five Coaches On The Hot Seat

I'm surprised they don't have Tom Herman on there. We are talking about Texas who has zero patience with a football coach and losing 4-5 games a year is not acceptable. I feel like he has to get to the Big 12 Championship game this year with a Red River win to save his job.

Helton at the #1 spot is not surprising and I was shocked they didn't fire him this year. Chip Kelly will also be up there if he has another season like the last one. I guess Florida dodged a bullet on that one.

There must be an error.. I see Vandy's coach on the hotseat. I was at happy hour last night and the consensus of the group was that Vandy's football program is exactly where it is accustomed to being.

Clay Helton still at USC is a clear indication that at the admin level, football isn't all that important there anymore. Or at least not as important as it used to be. Everyone suspects he's a lame duck coach, which has also killed their last 2 recruiting classes, yet they haven't made a move. The really poor 2019 and 2020 recruiting classes are going to make it even harder for them to turn it around.

And yes, Herman needs to have a 2020 season that it at least as good as his 2018 season in order to stay there, probably. If they go something like 8-5 again and decide to can him, he'd be 4 years into a 5-year deal and the buyout is totally manageable, even if they didn't have the financial resources that they do.

Texas whipping Utah buys Herman a little more time but it also buys Del Conte more time to find their next coach.

Gotta wonder where these guys stand as well

Jim Harbaugh
Tom Herman
Dave Doeren
Gus Malzahn
Chip Kelly
Mark Dantonio
Lovie Smith
The really interesting thing about Harbaugh is that he's definitely hearing chirping from people, but deep down they know the Michigan job isn't as good as they think it is. Michigan has a ton of tradition, great facilities, etc., but an overlooked fact about UM is that it isn't the recruiting cakewalk you might think it would be. Michigan is a fairly high population state, but it doesn't churn out football prospects like Ohio or Pennsylvania do. Michigan pretty routinely has to go into Ohio to get players, and Ohio St has had that state on lockdown for years. Buckeye fans are really quick to point out that many prominent figures in the history of the Michigan football program (Schembechler, Charles Woodson, even Harbaugh himself) are originally from Ohio.

Harbaugh is an excellent coach, but a very average recruiter. Gotta have the Jimmy's and Joe's to beat Ohio State.

I could definitely see SCAR parting ways with CWM if he does not make a bowl. Mason is probably safe at 5-7/6-6. Still puzzled as why in the he11 the canes ever hired Manny Diaz. That is too good of a job for someone so unproven. USC should have told Helton to hit the road last year. There is no excuse for SCAL to recruit at the level Helton as shown with the schools’ resources, tradition, and talent in CA. This upcoming season is a show me year for Sumlin.

Herman is living off 2 bowl wins against opponents that would’ve rather been anywhere other than playing in a bowl that particular night .

He gets a major shot at a real win when they go to LSU this season.

As another poster stated, I doubt the first thing the new AD at USC wanted to do was go on a coaching search spree. However, apparently Helton had quite a buyout left from Lynn Swan before he departed. I do realize USC has good money, but regardless, $20 million is a big sum for a brand new AD no matter how you slice it. Of course, that goes down significantly next year.

Texas, on the other hand, is much like A&M that they love to blow money. I'm not saying Tom Herman is overrated... well, maybe I am... but they haven't had great luck in the past decade with football coaches. They are even more desperate for a return to national prominence than you Vols are and are willing to fire anyone who doesn't complete a season with 10+ wins and a Big 12 championship in the first three years. Such things take time and the rot left over from Mack and Strong was going to take a while to be undone.

I giggle every time I see them get ranked in the top 10 preseason and then blunder and fail.

That's the million (or 5) dollar question right there.

Who does Texas get?

I remember the idiots there claiming they could swoop into Alabama and sway Saban away since "well, we're Texas by golly! Who wouldn't want to coach here?!" during one of their coaching searches.

Apparently Nick Saban doesn't want to coach there...

As well as some thinking they will go get Urban Meyer since he's available.

Herman is doing okay, but Texas doesn't accept "okay" in football especially when you're getting blasted by in state rivals as well as getting hammered at the Red River Shootout and losing to Iowa State. Regardless of what that Tweet says, Herman is firmly on the hot seat this year and he best hope Ehlinger doesn't get hurt.

USC ranking dead last in the PAC12 in recruiting is a direct result of them not firing Helton IMO. If they’re just going to fire him next season what’s the point ? Clearly football is no longer a priority at USC when better football players would rather go to Corvallis or Pullman than play in Los Angeles.

South Carolina has been mediocre under Muschamp. Is that not good enough? What do you have to do at South Carolina to keep you seat cool?
