2017: The 5 dumb things Volnation will continually write

Posts like this really bring out the VN Dumba$$es. Here's some hard truth for the whiners and complainers. We had 5 great years in the 90's(95-98), and can't get over ourselves. 20 frickin years ago, we had a great run.... That's it. We had a random good year here and there but nothing like those 5. Now somehow we expect that every single year or "fayhr the coach"....Just like we did the one that got us those great 5 years.
By the way, Butch's first 4 years have been about as good as Fulmer's and he started with less to work with and the conference has better talent top to bottom now. Does he say some stupid crap like "life champion"? Yes. But I can belly that to watch the program build... Even if it's hard to watch.

Nice summary... too bad Vol Nation just can't get some positive traction going... I am with you... reasonable expectations/critique OK... constant beat downs and rumorizing not productive, hurt recruiting and team morale.

Go Vols!!

Hey Windrider - love the avatar! Guess I need to brush up, but what is that Bird? Lovely old lady!

That is the U.S.Navy's advanced flight trainer, the North American T-28 and the year was 1962 in Pensacola, Florida. Makes me feel just a bit old, but proud to have been there. :)

Malone and the entire receiving corps were never busts. Tennessee doesn't throw to the WR's enough and they throw to many dink and dunk passes.

Malone, Jennings, et al, make Joey Kent, Marcus Nash and the guys Manning used to throw to look like scrubs.

The BIG problem in defending Tennessee is what Dobbs can do with his feet. There is a lot of stuff Tennessee has done over the last few years that ain't exactly how you draw it up on a chalkboard.

So, yes, unless the new starter has the same kind of mobility, that's going to be a big time adjustment.
Alabama has made a living off dink and dunk and screens. Execution is the key.

When Jones replaced Dooley, he wasn't the coach I wanted. That guy got put out of the playoff last night at the end of his third season. However Butch wanted to be here, and Petersen didn't.

Anyone who can't see we are in a much better place than we were when Dooley left is a certified idiot. But those are folks who feel they own the program, and the only way to get a championship caliber program is to mindlessly gripe.

However, to say some adjustment on the staff are not needed? Get real. I doubt Helfrich was in Nashville for a holiday. And in due time, it is obvious we will be hearing something about a S&C hire. Beyond that, who knows? Rumors upon rumors will have every available coach with a pulse as a potential hire. Some will want to gut the staff; not gonna happen. Dooley did that (mostly not by choice) and it killed recruiting. I truly believe whatever changes happen should happen this week, so any recruit that decides to jump ship gives us time to find a replacement and him a new offer.

Guess it is time to kick back, and see what happens next.

DOOLEY IS NOT THE MEASURING STICK AT A PLACE LIKE THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE.

ZOOK COULD HAVE DONE WHAT CBJ HAS DONE.

You measure the program by top teams and coaches.....not the worse.....so mediocre and loser

I get what you're saying and definitely got to let season play out. But losing Dobbs, Kamara, Barnett and Malone is a huge deal. Georgia will have the best roster imo in the east. Can we beat them sure and being at home will help. I'm not conceding it but gotta prove it.

When Georgia has the ball JJ will be on the sideline yelling "Hail Mary!!!" just to get in their heads...lol!

But yea, Georgia may have the best talent next year...we'll see if Kirby makes some of the same mistakes as he did this year...

I look forward to going into the swamp and blowing the gators out....

I worked for a WW2 Pacific Theater driver... F4 Corsair early, then the P51 Mustang. During a brief bout of brain fade even flew some with Pappy. Didn't talk much. Found out later he'd written a memoire and was a decorated pilot. I'm still in awe.

Sorry - but that is one of the dumbest arguments I have ever heard.

Our winning percentage the last 50 years is identical to Florida's. Florida fires coaches who perform better than Lyle.

And taking Fulmer out of the equation? Why? If you take Saban's years out then over the last 50 years Tennessee has a better winning percentage than Bama.

Same people writing posts like the OP will excuse Jones at every turn even if he loses 5 to 7 games next fall.

What cracks me up on here is if during the off-season you predict UT to ONLY have 7-8 wins you're called a Negavol.

After the season (8-4) those same people call you a Negavol if you say UT left some wins on the field.

Is the roster for 2017 comparable to what Fulmer started with in '93? No one can seriously suggest that Jones started with anything close to what Fulmer had in '93 but I think talent wise next year's team is close...Fulmer inherited a team that had gone 38-9-2 over the previous 4 years - losing 7 SEC games during that 4 years. Fulmer went 39-9 over his first 4 years - losing 6 SEC games during those first 4 years.

So I expect Butch's record over the next 4 years to be similar to what Phil accomplished...some don't think he can do that - I'll withhold judgement and give him a shot...he has gotten us back to the foot of the mountain but like everyone else, we want to be on top...

And dont forget the obsessed ones that cant get over the losses to SC and Vandy
Can only figure they lost a ton of money on their parlor cards or just love living in the past. '16 is signed, sealed and delivered. It's time to get ready for a great '17. JMHO

Without Dobbs, Barnett, AK and Malone there are 4 almost certain loses next season Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and LSU.

Hopefully the Vols can find suitable replacements for each but 6-6 or 7-5 certainly seems lika a reality next season.

Well then if we were setting a line for wins next season what should it be? I feel it's much more valid to expect us to maintain success or be better vs. 5-7 or 6-6 that I've been seeing.

By you're response it appears that with all that the talent on the roster that I laid out it's an ignorant thought to be expecting on the low side an 8-4 season but yet I am seeing people predicting 5-7 all over the place.

The expectation should be higher than 8-4 next season just as it rightly was this season IMO. Alabama and LSU will be the only two teams with distinct talent advantages.

The reality is that Jones has proven in each and every season he has been here that he is capable of losing to teams that he has the talent advantage over.

Given the sorry state of the SEC East the past few years, the discussion should be how the Vols are going to defend their title for a 3rd consecutive season.

Unfortunately, the reality of how Jones and his teams have actually performed precludes many folk including myself from actually setting the bar that high for next season.

We are seeing those lowered expectations despite having a roster that most teams would envy from a talent stand point even minus Dobbs, Kamara, Malone, Barnett, Sutton, and Maybin.

That's where I think it's short sighted to just focus on the returning talent as the ultimate factor in making a prediction next season. No matter how many 4 and 5 star players this team has, it's going to be up to the coaches to elevate their own games beyond what we have seen the past 4 seasons.

LMAO

On what planet is a 14-18 confrence record "about as good as" a 26-6 conference record?

Just guessing the context was the last 4 years - Fulmer was 17-15 the last four years (2005-2008). Kiffin was 4-4 in his only year and Dooley was 4-19 in his 3 years.

2007 was the best in those last 4 years - Tennessee was 6-2 that year but it took 4 overtimes for the team to beat Kentucky, 1 overtime for the team to beat South Carolina and they won by 1 over Vandy at Neyland - as the negvols would say (... if this were Jones and not Fulmer .... ) should have / could have been 3-5 in 2007. But a win is a win.

What's worse is the ones that said they would be happy with 8 wins, they are the same ones that want Butch fired.

Timing was bad this year for a coaching change, year 5 no one can say he didn't have enough time.

Get it together Butch!

Go Vols 2017!
