2017: The 5 dumb things Volnation will continually write

I don't know if some of y'all are just ignorant or if you're just so blinded with the fact that you want Butch Jones fired and are dedicated to seeing this team fail that you fail to see the obvious:

QB: Quentin Dormady 4*, Sheraton Jones 4*, Jarrett Guarantano 4*
RB: CFA 4*
WR: Juaun Jennings 4*, Marquez Callaway 4*, Tyler Byrd 4*
TE: None
OL: Venzell Boulware 4*, Jack Jones 4*, Drew Richmond 5*, Jason Robertson 4*, Ryan Johnson 4*
DL: Kyle Phillips 5*, Johnathon Kongbo 5*, KMac 5*, Tuttle 4*, Andrew Butcher 4*, Derelle Taylor 4*, Alexis Johnson 4*
LB: Cortez McDowell 4*, Dillon Bates 4*, Quarte Sapp 4*, DKJ 4*, JaQuain Blakey 4*, Daniel Bituli 4*
DB: Justin Martin 4*, Marquill Osbourne 4*, Micah Abernathy 4*, Nigel Warrior 4*, TKJr 4*, Evan Berry 4*, Rahsaan Gaulden 4*

By my count that's 32 4*-5* players currently on the roster, most have played significant roles and several have contributed in some way. We have the talent all around to easily stay at 8-4 or be better next season. OL will be strong with tons of experience returning, we have a solid RB returning next year with a solid 2nd option coming in, our defense will be significantly improved in Shoops second season with him being able to implement more. We will ride and die by QB play. If we have solid QB play we could have a 10+ win season, mediocre QB play we are looking at 8 wins again but our roster is more than set up for more success.

Well they were ignorant until your post.

Go Vols!

1) Thing is FOR SURE...The VOLS WILL BE the VIRTUAL, on-paper, in the minds of many, and...the VOLS have The BEST Staff in America...bar-NONE, SEC East & SEC Champions with an appearance to WIN IT ALL...after a Heisman is awarded to Quinton Dormandy.

2) Then the Season starts and REAL games are played...7-5.

This post is only funny if this bolded piece was done purposefully. For the sake of wanting to laugh, I'm going to say it was.

Amazing how well Nathan Peterman did after he left the the Vols. CBS has him as the #5 QB in the upcoming draft.

Don't underestimate some of these guys that have only had mop up duty.

Here's what we know for sure. We're losing some guys, we're keeping some guys. Shoop's defense needs to make a quantum leap before next season begins. The argument on VN will continue to rage over who's a "real fan", "negaVol", who wears "orange colored glasses" etc. We know for sure I don't really give a rats @$$ if I'm labeled any of those. So save your breath...or not. We know the Vols will win some, the Vols will lose some and VN posters will gnash their teeth, fire all the coaches, be a voice of reason, rightly or wrongly. But we know VOLNATION will be here and we're better off for it. All hail Freak and Happy New Year!

Looking at recruiting ranking from 2015 and 2016 there are 24 players that were at least a 4* still on the rooster. That is the rising Sophomore and Jr class (red shirt status not considered). There are 12 (.. not including Malone, Barnett and Kamara) in the Jr (rising Sr) class as well that I haven't heard any rumblings around declaring.

I actually counted 36 between the three classes.

Was gonna stay away til August, but a convo yesterday with a fellow vol fan and I couldn't believe the crap he was saying... so it pulled me back in.

For all the reasons below, I am making the prediction that a lot of this board's mind will explode when Phil Steele will have UT as a top 12 team when it runs its algorithms for next year.

1. "121 is an 8 win team at best" Ha.... Littered with 4 and 5 stars with a ton of experience returning on both lines, a proven 6.5 yd/carry RB, proven receivers... Every team in the East would trade their roster for a healthy UT roster today if they had the chance.

2. "Jones' olines always underachieve... Don't expect much next year" After 2 record setting offensive years, 2 running backs averaging 5-7 yrds/carry (despite many injuries), and the SEC's PASSING TD leader in Dobbs... you would think this narrative would die. Oh, forgot to mention that next year almost everyone returns on the deepest Oline in the SEC (that isn't bamas). Sure, they had a couple mediocre games... and all 5 starters were out vs bama, so we won't count that one. But whose oline do you want next year besides bamas? Not UF, Not UGA, not USC, not LSU, not Vandy, not UK, not A&M (lose both tackles)... UT's oline outperformed all these teams and/or they return more starters.

3. "KMAC, Kongbo, Phillips, and/or Tuttle are busts"
Same people who thought Malone was a bust, and O'brien was a bust, Richmond is a bust, etc... And just because UT had 2 DE's (Vareen and Barnett) that were too good to come off the field, doesn't mean that the guys behind them aren't going to be stars. It's actually how things should be. Don't be surprised if all of them end up on an all-sec team at the end of the year.

4. "121 is a huge talent drop-off" Barnett was special. But JRM and Sutton played a total of 2 healthy games, Malone is a bust :p, and JK didn't look like a huge drop off from Kamara this year. Every position group except RB, DE and QB will be as talented and more experienced next year when you take Sutton and JRM injuries into the equation. The same people who are saying this are the ones who stargaze all the time, but love to assume people are busts when they aren't all americans as freshmen.

5. "Mike Deboard, Stripland, Azzani, and Mahoney are terrible and we can't win with them" Again... record setting offense. And a Dlineman who broke Reggie White's record... Despite the most adversity anyone on this board has ever seen from injuries.

Now here are a couple true statements you will hear :

1. Dobbs will be missed. Hell ya he will... But consistency of the passing game could take a step forward with a qb who is more of a timing thrower.

2. The DBs x, y, z, a, b, c... Fill in the blanks. It really was the thing I was most disappointed with all season. These guys weren't getting "beat" per se. They weren't lacking athletically to keep up.... They just never look back for the GB ball. This is coming from a very glass half full vol. It is unacceptable how many times DBs would be stride for stride with the receivers and just not look for the ball to make a play.

Go Vols. Glad to get a Bowl win where all position groups played well. I have a feeling we have the right combination of confidence and a chip on our shoulder going into this offseason. If we get healthy the East is there for the taking next year.

I'm OK with this.

I believe the OP. Look at Alabama every year. They lose 4 or 5 mega stars every year and they just reload with players as good as the ones we lost.

Our roster is nearing the point where we only need to reload as well. I agree that our team 121 will be every bit as successful as this year was. Perhaps even better if we can add a QB coach and make one or two asst. changes. Looking at 10-3 with losses to Bama and 2 of the 3 SEC toughies (LSU, FLA, GA). We will then beat ALA in the rematch SEC championship. :rock2::rock2::rock2:

It baffles me anyone calls this season a success we blew it against 2 mediocre teams that prevented us from winning the division. Sorry but I'd rather not "reload" if that's what Reloading gets us. A good coach could probably win 8-9 games next year with this talent. Which means butch will win 5 or 6

Right, there is absolutely nothing that could happen between now and December that could impact the Vols football season.

See you in Atlanta in September and December!

If next year ends up being 7-5 or 6-6, all you will hear from a certain faction of the fans is rebuilding year pointing to all the talent we lost and what an amazing job Jones did just to get us to those 6 or 7 wins.

Haha, and it will drive the other side so crazy GE's stock will double.

Until Jones get us into a meaningful bowl, this staff will always be suspect.

After seeing the debacle that was this season, not sure how anyone could be confident in Jones.

But alas, we will continue to see these threads until that happens.

You just made the argument that a coach with 32 4 or 5 star players by your count can be expected to be able to maintain an 8-4 record. Maybe better if his new QB can bail them out of bad plays as Dobbs did with his athleticism the past 4 seasons.

And you're the one calling people ignorant?

Well then if we were setting a line for wins next season what should it be? I feel it's much more valid to expect us to maintain success or be better vs. 5-7 or 6-6 that I've been seeing.

By you're response it appears that with all that the talent on the roster that I laid out it's an ignorant thought to be expecting on the low side an 8-4 season but yet I am seeing people predicting 5-7 all over the place.

Many have zero confidence in Butch, that's why you are seeing such low predictions on wins.

We shall see. I hope they are wrong for the player's sake.

Go Vols 2017!

When Jones replaced Dooley, he wasn't the coach I wanted. That guy got put out of the playoff last night at the end of his third season. However Butch wanted to be here, and Petersen didn't.

Anyone who can't see we are in a much better place than we were when Dooley left is a certified idiot. But those are folks who feel they own the program, and the only way to get a championship caliber program is to mindlessly gripe.

However, to say some adjustment on the staff are not needed? Get real. I doubt Helfrich was in Nashville for a holiday. And in due time, it is obvious we will be hearing something about a S&C hire. Beyond that, who knows? Rumors upon rumors will have every available coach with a pulse as a potential hire. Some will want to gut the staff; not gonna happen. Dooley did that (mostly not by choice) and it killed recruiting. I truly believe whatever changes happen should happen this week, so any recruit that decides to jump ship gives us time to find a replacement and him a new offer.

Guess it is time to kick back, and see what happens next.
