Also looks like Tennessee will try and get involved with Daniel Giddens, he's transferring from Ohio State after one season. He's originally from Georgia, a 6'10" 235lb big man, played sparingly as a freshman at OSU.

It would look at least on the surface to me that...

- Tennessee is likely gonna be a tough sell to grad transfers as most are looking to go somewhere and win/NCAAT trip in their lone season.

- Barnes is trying to set things up for a big jump in year 3, bringing in size is not only a priority for this season, but also going forward as well, adding a quality big who has to sit out is definitely an option.

Rebuilding this thing with the 2016 class, a graduate transfer and then the 2017 class should be the plan IMO

Say no to transfers that have to sit out IMO.
Reason being if Barnes is as good as we think in recruiting we have to take advantage of the 2017 class

If this guy and Giddens have to sit a yr, that's a tough call between the 2. Imo On one hand Giddens should help improve the star gazers opinion of CRB's recruiting so far.(top 50ish 4 star coming out of hs) But on the other hand this dudes numbers aren't too shabby, albeit in a smaller conference.

Giddens is a former top 50 recruit, and fills a need in the post, what's the chances Barnes lands a top 50 big man in the 2017 class?

Not to be that guy, but we don't have a good history with grad transfers. McKnight didn't get the waiver from the SEC and Chiles was a dud.

I like it. One grad transfer won't gradually improve next season due to how young we'll be. Let these young guys get a year under their belt, bring in some talented young post transfers who have to sit out a year, but you get more than just on season out of, and make the jump in year three

Some develop and some don't. Not performing well as a freshmen make that success rate go down. Having a kid that didn't fit in or was ask to leave a successful program makes that success rate go down even further

I am cautiously optimistic about our 6 guys we have already

I am all in for the turkey kid or a graduate transfer

I have confidence that Barnes is the kind of recruiter that will be able to land higher rated guys in the 2017 class and that's why I don't think taking transfers in place of those spots is a good idea

IMO we will have 2-3

If we take a transfer this year it goes to 1-2 which I don't think is best

IMO the 2016 has a chance to be a decent foundation class that if Barnes can put 1-2 big pieces with it we might have something. I think those pieces are more likely to come from the 17 class

Only the first part would seemingly apply here, unless you've seen something about him being asked to leave or dismissed then that's just wild speculation on your part.

Again, how well did McRae perform year 1? Mostella? It's quite common for guys ranked say 40-60 that go to upper echelon teams to not get huge minutes year 1 sometimes, seems pretty simple to me.

It seems pretty clear to me by the above that unless you get a top 20 5 star type big man, you're not likely to get much of an immediate contribution. Point being, Giddens as a redshirt sophomore for 17-18 season is probably more productive than even a top 50 big that Barnes may be able to land like your suggesting. JMO

You are missing the point.

If a kid leaves a program there was a reason. Either the kid didn't feel he was a fit or the other way around.

Coaches that see kids as fitting into their plans work hard to make sure kids don't transfer. It would be rare for a kid that is highly thought of after their freshmen year to leave a school without a red flag off the court. Sure it happens but again when a kid leaves the chances that kid is going to be a "center piece" of the program is lessoned.

IMO this program is going to need a "center piece" to surround the 2016 to make that next jump. A maymon type nor prince(sorry ziti) isn't a "center piece" IMO. We need a Tobias Harris type player to add to this foundation class. If Barnes is that elite recruiter we think he should be able to pull off such a recruit in the 2017 class

You've never heard of a kid transferring because he is seeking a bigger role on the team, it happens all the time?

Maybe Thad Matta made promises like most coaches do and Giddens was upset they weren't fulfilled, that doesn't mean he doesn't fit or is a problem, again do you have any documentation you can provide as to this kid being an issue?

And who is to say you can't take a centerpiece guy still, but you're also the same person that will bash Barnes if he misses on a big time guy and his fall back isn't nearly as good. I would have a hard time promising that we are gonna land a top 50 big man in the 2017 class, by my count there's only 1 we are pursuing and that's Obiagu who is a top 15 overall player being pursued by every school in America. I would rather take Giddens and still push for Obiagu and miss with Giddens on our roster, than pass on Giddens in hopes for Obiagu and be without both and end up with another Kasongo or Alexander?

It's also worth mentioning Yurtseven, talk about a centerpiece? So you take Giddens and he sits out while Yurtseven comes in and is a one and done that likely speeds up Tennessee's rebuild, theoretically they should be on the trend up and losing Yurtseven but having Giddens in the wings practicing for that year will help the transition.


To each their own though.

Monday, the university confirmed an ESPN report that the Mableton, Ga., native has asked for his release from the program and is expected to transfer. The move is for family reasons, a source told The Dispatch, and his next step is unknown.

Giddens is the second member of Ohio State’s freshman class to transfer this year and he might not be the last. Guard Austin Grandstaff left the program in mid-December, and Dayton native A.J. Harris is likely to follow suit. Freshman JaQuan Lyle, who said after the Florida game that he would be back next season, reiterated that on Twitter on Monday night after the news broke.

Giddens averaged 3.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and a team-high 1.5 blocks per game in 33 appearances, primarily off the bench in relief of sophomore center Trevor Thompson. Saturday, Thompson announced his plans to test the NBA draft waters and will train for the combine without hiring an agent, keeping his eligibility intact for next year.

I said one of two things

Either a problem off the field OR lack of fitting in was the likely the reason for transfer

Either way I trust a guy that has recruited at an elite level over a long period of years in the 17 class over a kid that left a program for whatever reason

Do y'all know when rivals will do their update on bb recruits ??? I know about a month ago the vq guys seemed to think some more of our guys would be top150 and maybe even top 100. It was in the war room.

I think 3 kids are transferring from OSU, so it might not be the players.
