Calathes was a McDonald's all American. NBA scouts probably knew who he was when he was 16. He also played for a prestigious program.

The NBA scouts knew who Stockton was too. The Jazz took him 16th overall.

My point with Calathes is that the league isn't so deep/crowded that a guy barely drafted found a spot on a roster in spite of being limited offensively/athletically.
