2013 JUCO PG Dre Mathieu

LOL man, I am glad I pulled you out of the ignore pile. Once again Pa's Trick putting words in Vol fans mouth.

And which player has CCM cut, by the way?

You must not read much because about half of this thread is discussing the necessity to cut one or two players in the roster to make room for the pg who recently committed and to make room for Mathieu if he is offered and accepts.

And there is a big difference between going to a player and telling them they probably arent going to be seeing much PT, with the new guys coming in and a coach pulling a scholly. The fact is he hasnt cut anybody. Not sure what folks were posting when CCM was hired, but its purely argumentative to call Vol fans hypocrites for saying CCM was a stand up guy, who doesnt sign players just to sign them. He is only on his second recruiting class here, and so far everyone he has brough in is still in.

Tony B is a clown, as he likes to call other people. Let me guess he prolly got this info from that X guy that he thinks knows everything.

He is going to have let one person go in order to have a scholarship for Thompson who just committed. Or one person on current roster will have to quit the team to make room for the scholly.

Doubt TB would run with garbage info and claim a family source. That's just nuts.

He could stand to be more guarded with what he shares with his audience. That's for sure.

I find it weird that the Dre Matthieu story starts heating up and then Dre says he hasn't even spoken with anyone from UT. Even there has been talk of UT checking him out.

Cool we agree on that. But this happens all the time in basketball now. Why single out CCM on a Vol website?

I am not a Tony B follower even though I do read his blog from time to time. But, X called the Jalen Hurd commitment. Maybe he just got lucky, but he seemed to have some info.

He may be right or wrong in this case- have no clue.

I seem to recall that when CCM was hired many posters in the bball forum talked about how CCM was a stand up guy who did not sign guys then later cut them and that he wanted 4 year players. Those posters also criticized CBP for doing the same thing.

Now when it appears that CCM may do the same thing, it is suddenly okay. Not to mention all the posters who have been slamming Cal for probably having to cut a number of players.

I suppose that it is much easier to criticize other coaches or programs for these types of actions but it is hypocritical to turn right around and say that the same action is "best for the program" when done by CCM.

It's a dirty business but a coach should never be blamed for improving his roster. The fat has to be cut somehow. If someone didn't get mad at Pearl for cutting a scrub like Marques Johnson then they should extend the same courtesy to Martin.

I do not disagree with the premise of making your roster better by "releasing players"! I was just stating that it was hypocritical for people to hammer Cal for doing when it appears that CCM will be doing the same thing. And also pointed out that when CCM was hired, many posters said that he did not things like that as one of his strong points.

I agree with you but I think the people that were going after cal are think that he is the type that tells all his recruits that they are one and dones and definitely going to the league now he has run into a problem and is either telling them they wil come off the bench or to test the NBA or transfer.

All fanbases have fans out of touch with the reality of that sport.
Since you didnt answer a previous attempt, let me ask again... why do you point out something that everyone here TODAY agrees goes on everywhere, on a Vol website?

Kinda fun reading through this thread with the conflicting reports from Basilio and Smithey. I have never seen Mathieu play, but would even be an upgrade over Brandon Lopez? They are both about 5' 9'", put up similar numbers in high school, and both were first-team All-KIL. One walked on at Morehead, the other at UT. One has has a year of low to mid major coaching and a year at JUCO. The other has two yrs of SEC coaching going up daily against Tre Golden. Mathieu did get lots of playing time this yr and his team went 30-5 making the quarterfinals of the national JUCO tournament. I was just wondering what those that have seen Mathieu play, think he brings to the table and would those skills be worth losing someone already on scholarship since his resume doesn't look much better than one of our walk-ons.

Mathieu has offers from UCLA, Ole Miss and Washington State to name a few...Lopez has offers from?

True, but Mathieu didn't have those kind of offers out of high school either if you are comparing to Lopez's high school offers. Remeber, he walked on at Morehead. The offer from UCLA was from Howland, who is no longer there. Washington State won 4 games in the Pac-12. Ole Miss has proven to be legit and has some holes to fill. Who knows what kind of offers Lopez might get at this point if he were available? He has proven he can put in some quality minutes in SEC play. Mathieu may be ready for prime time, but I still am not sure that it is an upgrade over Lopez.

Lopez would not be getting SEC offers I can assure you. Mathieu is about to add offers from A&M and Arkansas as well...there's no comparison between the 2 to be honest with you.

Matthieu has good offers. No offense to Lopez but if he were capable of getting those types of offers, he'd be on scholarship here or be looking to transfer out. He got some minutes here mostly due to lack of a quality bench especially at his position.

Their stock coming out of high school has nothing to do with their stock today.

I totally agree with you all. There is no way to predict how two players will develop over two years. I like Mathieu's numbers and that he played on a successful team. I like that he was voted the best small player at the National JUCO. However, in tempering those expectations, I tried to compare apple to apples in my original post. They were comparable in high school and I would like to think Lopez has had better coaching and gone against tougher competition in practice. Also, one doesn't have look any farther than Edwards or Miller on our current team to see that JUCO's don't always work out. Miller had a whole lot more interest coming out of high school than these two point guards ever dreamed of. That being said, the prospect of a lightening quick point guard joining our team is rather appealing. I am just questioning if Mathieu has really developed to that level.

Miller and Edwards didn't have big time offers like mathieu has coming out of JUCO...and neither averaged 17ppg 6rpg 6apg
