They're not mutually exclusive but name a coach who is considered great that didn't have great players.
Would Greg Popovich be considered as great as he is if Tim Duncan never suited up for the Spurs?
Probably not.
Don't even have to go that far. If CP3 bears that much of the responsibility for his team's success, he would have accomplished a lot more in Nawlins. As it was, he won exactly one playoff series his whole time there, and much of the time his roster wasn't any worse than what he's got now.
