1st play on Offense

My fear is that if they do that on the first play and score, they'll ride the clock the rest of the game. But the ball has to be perfectly thrown so that the receiver doesn't have to exert himself to make the play.

No need to risk injury to players, Vols will start looking ahead to Florida. Rely on Shoop to hold Hokies scoreless for the remainder of the game, Tennessee wins 7-0.

Bomb down the sideline. Even if he misses, you send a message. Won't happen, but a girl can dream.

They'll expect us to run it up the middle, so naturally we'll attempt a deep pass to Malone. But the fact that they know we know they are expecting the run, and their subsequent pass defense, allows us to run it up the middle for a huge gain...

unless they know we know that they know...

What would you run on Saturday if you were Debord/Jones?

Me?

I am doing a play action to Hurd and letting Dobbs turn the ball loose for as far as he can throw it. Let VT know you are going to throw it deep from the get go.

Hopefully, PW or Malone bring it down and you are set from then on.

What say you fellow "keyboard coaches"?

That seems to be the ongoing theory, although it baffles me. "We stink at throwing the football and everyone knows it, so let's show them up by throwing the ball!" I would line up in a Power I or Power T, get rid of the fancy blocking schemes and just straight run block, ans smash them straight in the mouth. And I'd keep doing it until they stacked the box and still couldn't stop it. Then I'd do it some more. Throw in kust enough passing to keep them guessing. Forget read option, I'd go straight option. If I wanted to pass, I'd put in Dormady or J.G. because Dobbs has proven he can't throw the ball.

This is a statement game. We should line up and run it down their throat. They will know what we are about to do and will be unable to stop us.

At half time they will adjust and sell out to stop the run, and will fail.

Two back split set (Hurd and Kamara) with two (Wolf and Jakob Johnson) at TE and Croom split out wide. Play action screen pass to the open back with big blockers in front. Hopefully will give VT's rush defense pause for the game.

I'm lining up all game in 3 wR sets with Hurd and Kamara in split backs. Handing off to them. Sending them in motion. Receivers all day middle of field passing routes

Long ball to Malone or Preston. Let the VT defense know we aren't afraid to go deep. It could help open up the run game if we complete a long ball early

My first play would be play action in a 2 tight end set with Wolf and Croom. Streak the Flanker and Split-end to take the safety and/or safeties out of the play. Then fake the dive to Hurd on the week side and have Dobbs bootleg to the stong side with Croom (weak side tightend) run a deep post to the stong side while Wolf (strong side tightend) runs a short to intermediate out route giving Dobbs the run pass option.

I know everyone has already said it, but I will reiterate it because history has proven it to be true...

If you expect anything less than a run between the tackles with Hurd for 2-4 yards you are setting yourself up for disappointment. How often does Butch/DeBord decide to go for the "killing blow" (so to speak) first play of the game?

It's going to be a Hurd run up the middle like every other first down.

As in the majority of first down plays last week, the Vols will line Hurd up over the left guard, hand him the ball running parallel to the line of scrimmage as he tries to run off right tackle. Normally, he gets there about the same time, the majority of the defensive players arrive.

Butch is so afraid of negative or no gain on first down that he is fine with getting those 2 yards every time. His stats show that teams that get positive yardage on 1st down convert more than teams that gain no yards.

they will be playing the run and stacking the box from the first play on, I dont blame them until we can prove that we can throw the ball consistently.

Anything else would be coaching malpractice.

i have no idea what they'll do first, but i'd expect they'll have 12-15 plays scripted to establish some type of identity. and i'm betting it will have everything to do with establishing what this O line has worked on this week.

and as i hear CBJ talk about them running 85-90 plays, i'd expect it to be run heavy to keep that highpowered VT offense off the field. to possess the ball will be the goal.

Play action, hit Croom in the middle of the field for 10-15 yards. Next Play: Play action throw it deep to Malone. Next Play: Slant to Williams. Next play: wheel route to Kamara. Next play: fade route to Smith/George/Byrd Next play Draw to Hurd. Next play--Read Option Hurd/Dobbs. That would be how I would start the game.
