Calloway should start next year. Thought it was kind of messed up how the staff did him after the Florida game though. He should have still played a lil .
Dropped an easy pass that would have put us in a big game. Should have seen the bench after that.

Having seen what this offense did on the field this season, ALL of the receivers ought to be super motivated during bowl and spring practices. I think how the staff handled Calloway and Hyatt sends a very clear and strong message, nothing is going to be given, you must earn your playing time. Tillman will be in their ear about working hard pays off. Truly believe WRU is coming back to Knoxville.

Multiple passes in that Florida game. You can’t play someone you can’t trust to make plays and catch the ball. Hopefully he puts his head down and learns from it because he has loads of potential

We are nowhere near the 85 number. This season we were one of the fewest scholarship teams in the country. 85 won't be an issue.

Currently sitting at 89 with the new signing class. Counting Alontae Taylor going pro. So we need at least 4 more spots to open. Assuming Cade, Calbert, Solomon and Flowers go pro we're right at the number.

Obviously it's a moving target, but we'll actually need some guys to hit the portal if we want to continue to flip the roster.

Velus, Tremblay, Payton, Theo Jackson, Matthew Butler, Chase McGrath, Kenneth George Jr., and Blakely were super seniors that cover 8 putting us at 81. Alontae, Cade (pretty sure he's leaving), and I doubt Soloman comes back (though nothing official yet), making it 78. It's not likely that Flowers, Fant, Bumphus, or Calbert leave and Solon Page already announced he's returning. That means, as of now, we can add 7 more (giving us a class of 27). I'm sure that someone else will hit the portal, just don't know if it will be enough (scholarship players) to free up the needed spots to sign 32 new players this class.
This is all considering that they don't award any walk-ons with a scholarship.

I'm counting the super seniors being gone already, so if we assume your assumptions are correct the I still show we have 86 on roster if we count the incoming 20 plus 1 transfer. Am I miscounting someone?

QB (3) - Hooker, Milton, Jackson
RB (6) - Small, Wright, Whitehead, Beckwith, Williams, Sampson
WR (10) - Hyatt, Tillman, Calloway, Merrill, Coby, Keyton, Nimrod, Miller, White, Webb
TE (4) - Fant, Warren, Campbell, Nixon
OL (19) - Wright, Daivs, Parker, Perry, Carvin, Robinson, Lane, Mays, Lampley, Spraggins, Akporoghene, Crawford, Harris, Calbert, Mincy, Nichols, Clipper, Reddick, Grant

Offense Total - 42

DL (15) - Bumphus, McNeil, Bell, Simmons, Terry, O. Thomas, Baron, Bailey, Ku.Garland, Young, Eason, West, Pearce, Phillips, Josephs
LB (11) - Mohan, Beasley, Mitchell, Kw. Garland, Page, Banks, Willis, R.Harrison, Marley, Perry, Herring
DB (15) - Hadden, Burrell, Rucker, Holiday, Fields, Turnage, Charles, Labruzza, McCollough, McDonald, Slaughter, Flowers, D. Thomas, Williams, C.Harrison

Defense Total - 41

SP (3) - Albright, Brooks, Carver

Specialist Total - 3

Seriously, what do I have wrong here? I'd love to be showing extra spots for transfers/recruits but I still show us as over the 85?

Solomon is at Tulsa

From a quick glance, there is no Solomon at WR anymore. Kenny Solomon transferred. Unless you meant Hunter Salmon (TE), and I think he's a walk- on. I'll have to verify, but there may be a couple of other names that are walk-ons. But you are correct in that still doesn't give us 7 spots.

Yeah, the only thing I can figure is I have walk on's in my count? I've been trying to stay current with it but it's more confusing now than ever.

I keep up with the numbers also. Mine match yours so I think you are correct. We are sitting pretty close to 85 with the players currently expected to leave and the new 2021 signees. We will probably need to lose an unexpected current scholarship player for each HS or transfer portal guy added ... especially if we self impose 5 scholarship reductions in 2022 as some expect.

Many assume that due to the low number of scholarship players on the roster this season that we would be able to sign 32. That just isn't the case. It's part of why the coaches haven't been very active in the portal, but you can't seem to get most of Volnation to understand this simple fact.

Hooker, Fant, Bumphus, Mitchell Flowers, Brooks and McGrath (not listed) would all be super seniors so they won’t count against 85. Not sure if Carver is on scholarship yet. That would be 40 on offense, 38 on defense, 1 on special teams for 79 total scholarships used (assuming your list has all scholarship players listed). If Carver is on scholly that makes 80 of 85 used.

I think the super seniors count towards the 85 this year. Could be wrong though.

My fault, that is correct. So they will need some guys to transfer out to accept more guys. I imagine they will have some tough conversations and they probably already know some who will not return or who they will ask to move on. Unfortunate but that’s how it goes.

NIL could mean teams no longer have to sweat the 85 number. I haven't seen any specific examples yet, but can't figure out why teams can't just find a few willing sponsors to pay tuition/housing/food for players in exchange for autographs or whatever. Those players won't have to be on scholarship.

I'm not being facetious, just can't see how the old rules apply in an era of what amounts to professional college sports. If this isn't specifically prohibited in the rules, it will happen.

True. I’ve heard some University of Texas position groups where even walk ons are getting a monthly 4 to 5 figure draw from NIL.
