'19 CA QB JT Daniels (Georgia commit)

I love this guy. Spot on in every respect.
That pretty much changed my mind, or I guess I should say pushed me much farther in that direction. As long as it doesn't cause us to lose 2-3 years of HB...then go for it.

I will say Pate made some compelling arguments about this situation, but talking about Bamas RB situation that one year was not one of them. The reason Bama found their selves in that situation was exactly because of overstuffing the RB room and pissing everybody off.

It was bad roster management...period.

"Cost us the game" is when the game is in hand, or close to it. Guarantano made a bad play in that spot that put the game out of reach, but saying it "cost us the game" is unreasonable.

Best case scenario after that play, we are still down 28-19, on the road, to the #1 team in the country, without Bituli, halfway through the 4th quarter. What would be the win expectancy, down by a touchdown and still needing a PAT, a TD, a 2-pt conversion, and a defensive shutout just to tie the damn game? 5% 10%? 20%? It didn't help, but certainly didn't "cost us the game."

You know what else cost us a remote CHANCE at winning the game? Bituli foolishly targeting and missing the 2nd half. Toots foolishly targeting the prior game and missing the 1st half. A backup LB getting drunk and disorderly and released from the team. Wright and Calbert both getting penalties inside the 10 yard line on the same drive. Crappy punting. You get the idea...
The bolded really seems like a distinction without a difference. To say it put the game out of reach is to suggest that victory was possible given the opposite result of the actual outcome.

And in fairness to the recognition of your laundry list of other plays that contributed to us losing that game and an effort to recognize the idea that a single play rarely determines a game's outcome, I said that the Guarantano play "cost us the game as much as one single play in the middle of a game could have".

As previously mentioned, rarely does a single play in a game decide the outcome. Of those that do, they almost always come on a decisive final play/series, as you noted. I didn't say we played perfectly otherwise, and that his singular decision on that play solely cost us the game. I didn't say those other plays you mentioned weren't also contributing factors.

However, it is inarguable that his decision in that single instance was the turning point, and by your own admission, put a previously competitive game out of reach. So did it cost us the game? No. Did it cost us a chance at winning the game? Yes. Seems like semantics, really.

You and I are in agreement I think. My comment was directed at the original poster who just flatly said JG's one play "cost us the game." Which I find absurd, for the reasons listed above. Sorry if my second reply quoted the wrong post.

....all of which does make me wonder about things that famously, indubitably, really DID cost games....

The players
  • Akeem Olujuwon losing both Lorenzo Charles AND the rim
  • Earnest Byner fumbling
  • Matthew Fisher-Davis fouling while ahead
  • Chris Webber forgetting how to count timeouts
  • Chuck Knoblauch arguing while runners circled the bases
  • Bill Buckner
The coaches
  • Pete Carrol's goal line play call
  • Lenny Wilkins (?) assigning Craig Ehlo to guard MJ
  • CM Newton sticking to man defense vs Danny Manning's Jayhawks

Washington would be perfect for him

HB hasn't proven he will do anything in CFB. I love the article because it says to simply go after the best guys available then let the chips fall where they do. If HB can beat Daniels and everyone else out... then great. If he can't then he either waits his turn or moves on. The teams at the top have done this very thing for a long time.

Maybe to a slight degree but not "period". Some of the guys lost weren't because they decided to move on of their own accord.

Why not? Walkon who was a former starter? Might end up as needed depth when all the chips fall.
I meant when I thought they had given him a scholarship. Yeah, if he wants to go to UT and pay then it is great to have someone like him somewhere between 4 and 6 on the depth chart.

You guys really want a QB that had a mediocre freshman season and to top it off he is coming off an injuy.
Y’all use the excuse of HB not getting a spring and summer, well what about JT?
Don’t use the ol’ well he has experience ******** because he hasn’t played in a year.

Also, I know you’re like “if it pisses HB off and he leaves” blah blah blah, but think about this, you take another QB, you piss off Maurer as well, he also leaves. You’re left with JT D and JT S, with no elite QB commits for the future.

JT Daniels has the experience of a college season, off-season, fall camp and was sidelined for another college season. HB was able to participate in 3 spring practices. I trust JT will be able to pick up a offense faster than HB. Maybe neither will be able to pick up the offense fast enough to make a difference, who knows.

HB could be the better option but I feel more confident of playing the best option with JT Daniels in the mix.

If the QBs leave because of increased competition I don't think they mentally have what it takes to deal with adversity to lead us to championships. It's a losers mentality to transfer out before they compete. We need an alpha leading the offense.

He’ll get a scholarship...primary reason he chose us. He’ll be higher on that chart after the inevitable transfers.

Keller type of impact

Because JG is a 7-5 QB and you may be cool with that but the rest of us want better results. Whether you realize it or not JTD is an immediate upgrade to the QB room. He’s better than any QB on the roster not named Bailey. And he might be better than HB. Hope we get to find out.
