This is a big deal. Forget the stars. I've never seen a 5 star punter. Punters are game changers. Getting the #1 punter in the nation is huge.

Great pick-up! Punters and kickers are important. Remember Daniels' punt to pin the Bulldogs within the 5 at the end of the last game against them in Knoxville? Helped seal the win.

Not just within the 5, but at the half yard line! Most clutch punt I've seen.

I admit to being a Butch critic, but one thing the guy can do is develop punters. He is the best we have had since Cafego.

The majority of Recruiting Services if not all services will only put a kicker or punter upto 3*

As for recruiting, Tennessee almost … almost … went a week without another addition to its 2018 class, but late Thursday afternoon, 3-star punter Skyler DeLong committed to the Vols. DeLong visited Knoxville twice this spring, but his pledge still came as a bit of a surprise since few knew the Vols had officially extended an offer two weeks ago. Punter commits are rarely sexy, but DeLong is ranked No. 2 at his position for a reason and the South Carolina native could fill the shoes of Trevor Daniel, who’s been a real weapon for Tennessee the last several seasons. Notably, DeLong is also a kickoff specialist, something the Vols will also lose with Aaron Medley’s graduation after next season. Clemson, Alabama and N.C. State were pushing hard for DeLong to camp and visit, but after two trips on Rocky Top, he’d seen all he needed to see.

Welcome, Skyler! I hope that we need to use you very rarely as a punter, but when we do need to kick it away, I hope that they are allBoom!!!!!ing howitzers that change the field.

Nation Ford coach Michael Allen earlier this week described DeLong’s recruitment as “crazy,” because of the national interest. DeLong’s Tennessee offer is for punting and kickoffs, indicative of his lively right leg. He’s working on perfecting his Aussie-style punt, but feels confident that the rest of his skills will be ready for the SEC. There’s still work to do on his long frame. “I definitely need to gain probably about 20 pounds,” he said.

DeLong said he hit 81 percent of his kickoffs into the end zone for touchbacks last fall and averaged about 40 yards per punt. His recruitment isn’t over, but if did end Thursday he’d be thrilled to land at Tennessee. He has two other full scholarship offers for punting, from Rutgers and Army. DeLong plans to attend camps this summer at Tennessee, Clemson and Alabama.

FWIW, the stats reported to MaxPreps by Nation Ford HS last year say DeLong averaged 34 yards per punt and 54% of his kickoffs were touchbacks.

Chris Sailer Kicking's No. 2 punter in his class, ranked 3rd by Kohl's. Class of '17 walk-on Joe Doyle is ranked 6th by Sailer & 5th by Kohl's. Between these two guys, we'll hopefully have a worthy successor to Trevor Daniel.

As far as my memory (very limited) we had 3 Delong's- Steve, Kenny & Keith. All-Americans . Not sure about Kenny. It would be great if Skylar were a legacy, just like the Colquitt's were as punters. I know we have lots of legacy's. That's what makes UT as great as they are!!

Some may laugh about this commit but if he lives up to the ranking and can kick the ball out of the end zone and pin teams inside the 20 on punts would be a great pick up.:welcomec::welcomec::welcomec::bammer::bammer::bammer::baloon::baloon::baloon::fireworks::fireworks::fireworks::td::td::td::welcome3::welcome3::welcome3:pUNTERS deserve a BOOM TO.:)
