His stock dropped quite a bit. The other qb Clemson got is actually more coveted now
I understand Hunter is pretty much enemy #1 around here, and I don't blame yall. I'll throw my $.02 on him and our overall QB situation as best I can.
First, I think your overall point has some validity, but you're probably going a little too far. Brice is probably rated appropriately, just inside the top 150, and he's shown to have some upside and probably a little more mobility.
Hunter's probably a little high and I don't see him holding onto his 5* status. I also don't see the bottom falling out, so I think he'll end up somewhere in the 40-75 range in the final rankings. No matter how it turns out, he'll eventually have a fierce battle with Brice a few years down the line and it's obviously far too early to call a favorite.
I think a point that comes up a lot with him is not fitting our system, and I certainly understand that. The thing is, Watson is really our first true dual threat QB under Dabo. Tajh Boyd could pick up a 3rd and 2 like nobody's business, but you'd really have to screw up your coverage for him to break a long one on you. He was also literally the worst zone read QB I've ever seen.
Clemson's Achilles heel for the entire Chad Morris era was a soft, mildy athletic OLine, and the absence of a running game that could take advantage of some of the openings in the middle, as defenses schemed to take away our outside weapons.
I feel like that has changed, as Clemson has finally started landing some talented, athletic guys along the Oline. If Brice or Hunter can just be a moderate threat running the ball and can make good decisions on when to do so, I think they will fit quite well with the 2017 version of the Clemson offense.
The fact is, our WR corps is starting to get downright nasty from both a talent and depth perspective. With that, I think Clemson is being smart in playing to their strengths and getting a couple QB's who we know can get the ball to our playmakers.
Would we love for Kelly Bryant or Zerrick Cooper to develop into Deshaun 2.0? Abso-freaking-lutely. But they aren't willing to bet the house on it and they're not going to risk being in a position where they don't have someone on campus that can't exploit the inevitable mismatches on the outside.
In short, theyre diversifying their portfolio at the most important position on the field.
