'17 MS RB Cam Akers (FSU commit 12/27)

2 Crystal Ball predictions came out for Akers going to FSU.....one on the 14th and one on the 15th.

LSU probably was the destination until recently, FSU has made a huge run on him. Both situations are actually very similar, same offense but LSU has Canada coming in as well. Comes down to what school and coaches he likes and whether distance is an issue.

I am hoping LSU has made backup plans if Akers doesn't work out.

Probably Coleman, considering that all LSU has to do is give LA dudes an eye and they drop us like flies.

Akers is an early enrollee which means, for the most part, the active recruitment of him is over, due to the Dead Period. Akers will make his decision live on National TV at the Army Bowl on January 7th and then enroll at the school he picks, just days later.

Tennessee is the dark horse in this recruitment. You don’t hear a lot about them in the media, in terms of Akers recruitment, but those on the inside continue to tell me Tennessee is in this more than they’re getting credit for.

I’ve got my Cam Akers Crystal Ball on Florida State. That’s been my pick since August 9th. I’ll tell you right now that I don’t know (for sure) where Akers is going. Nobody does. But nothing I’ve heard over these last two-to-three weeks would cause me to switch it. At this point I’m going to ride my original pick all the way to the finish line.

This article was published last night. Not a surprise a couple more CBs came in for FSU this morning. They are just rolling with Newberg's guess since he didn't change it as of last night.

Newberg clearly thinks FSU has the best chance noting that Cook is headed to the NFL and Fisher and Graham having lots of success with RBs as the two biggest selling points. He thinks Ole Miss and LSU are longer shots mainly due to their OC situations and Ole Miss' NCAA investigation. He also thinks Ohio State is likely out of the race due to distance and because Meyer did not do an in-home visit with Akers. I think this is all good news for UT.

Newberg's comments on the schools being considered other than FSU and UT:

Ole Miss went in-home with Akers and his family for their final visit on Sunday as well. Akers ended up canceling his official visit to Ole Miss the week prior and was out of town until Sunday at the Mississippi-Alabama Classic. Even though he didn't take the trip, the Rebels are still a legit threat to land Akers.

A source tells Noles247 that Ole Miss brought nearly the entire coaching staff to the house for their final visit. It’s closing time for all of these coaching staffs and it’s all about putting on the hard-sell, but a source close to the family says Ole Miss may have come off a bit “desperate” in their final visit.

Another factor working against Ole Miss, beyond the NCAA investigation, is the fact they do not currently have an offensive coordinator in place. It’s hard to make your pitch to one of the most dynamic offensive weapons in the country when you don’t know who will be calling the plays.

LSU also went in-home without an offensive coordinator in place. That changed today with the official hiring of Matt Canada, but he was unable to get a face-to-face with Akers before his decision. Canada has coached a host of talented backs in his career, but he lacks a true relationship with Akers.

Ohio State must have seen the writing on the wall because Urban Meyer did not do an in-home visit with Akers. Distance plays a factor in Akers recruitment and the lack of a head coach visits is a sign that Ohio State felt their time would be used better on other targets.

When does the dead period officially start?

One thing that we could have going for us is the other recruits like Trey, Grey and a couple others, is that they can still continue to recruit him hard everyday. They better be texting and calling him everyday. I am sure FSU, LSU and Ole Miss will have active players/recruits recruiting him as well but I don't think many of them have the relationship that him and Trey have. Crossing my fingers.

So it looks like its down to us and FSU. I'll take it.

If it truly down to those two I definitely like our chances. Distance is roughly the same to Knoxville and Tallahassee. 443 miles to Tallahassee vs 502 miles to Knoxville. Roughly 7 to 7.5 hours respectively. Also, FSU doesn't have Gillespie. RB coach who is from right down the road from Akers' home town. Yeah. I'll take our chances with that setup.

FSU is largely selling him on Cook leaving. FSU has Jacques Patrick back who is very capable just like UT has John Kelly.

IMO, if he chooses FSU, it will be because of their coaches history with RBs as well as their scheme not because of who will still be on the roster.

Yeah. Gillespie is developing a pretty good track record with RBs too. I think the relationship there is the deciding factor. The best part is, this kid could literally go anywhere because nobody knows more than a guess.
